Whoah EY1.... I hope I have the freedom to decide after having a child if I want to go back to work or if I can stay home with him/her for longer without worrying about my company squeezing every last cent from me. Or about jerks like you calling me scum
Also, congrats OP! :)
EY2 - not the same at all. A baby needs someone to make sure it stays alive 24/7. Otherwise that is murder. Pretty sure that is not the same as traveling.
EY1/EY2, don't be immature. It is our responsibility to support birth of new child as a society. Economically they are the ones who will pay our Social Security benefits when we are older. OP doesn't own anyone anything. Raising a child is a big responsibility. You cannot compare it to a vacation around the world. If everyone decides not to have kids, we will have similar problems as Japan
*should not be considered PTO
@EY1 - your comment is illustrative of your parents' unsafe sex practices that lead to you
The firm never intended on the maternity leave being an exit bonus. I hope @OP is a standup woman and stays with the firm.
EY2, I understand your point. But as Manager 1 mentioned, it's society's responsibility to be supportive of parents raising the next generations. Unfortunately, the US is one of the worst of all developed countries in this regard. To your point about people not having children not getting to take advantage of a similar benefit - a lot of companies are starting to offer extended leave options after a certain period of time for whatever you want to use it for (travel, spending time with sick relatives, service trips, etc). HOWEVER, i do not think it's a fair comparison expecting extended paid time off to enrich your life through travel etc (which I fully support and do) and getting paid time off to birth and care for a human being. It's pretty ludicrous to compare he two.
But it's your choice to have a child. People who choose not to have a child should not be punished by having l no similar benefits.
At Deloitte if you come back for more than 30 working days you don't have to pay back the maternity leave pay. Obviously EY1 has never pushed another human being out of their bodies. Also yeah people who choose not to have a child don't get maternity leave benefits. I don't see how that is "punishment". Get over it and take a sabbatical.
No. you can still take the primary parental leave = 8 weeks of 100% pay and then leave. But if you take fmla you will have to pay back your insurance premiums for that time off
Congratulations on your new (on the way) baby! 👶🏾
EY1 clearly a Hilldog supporter
Congratulations, and family always comes first. If you're really on the fence and make the decision when you return then I'm sure everyone will understand. You'll never get in trouble either way, but taking generous leave and benefits with no intention of coming back and contributing screws everyone else just a little.
No
^ leave if you want after the vacation, but pay the company back. Easy as that. Don't be a bottom feeding freeloader.
We don't know her intentions. What if she planned on taking the money and leaving as soon as she popped? If and when I give birth, I would never leave after taking the money. It's unethical.
But you are assuming the worst case.
What leave benefits specifically.
Hmm, I don't agree with it being a benefit that you earn. If that's the case, it would be discriminatory based on the fact that it is only paid out to those that have kids. What about people that choose to not have kids? Do they not deserve personal time off with pay?
^ Deloitte family leave plan. Applicable to all that have a family need SO, child, parent., etc.
No, don't be silly
