If it were a problem, we’d all be fucked!
Big brother is always watching you! #1984
You might get fired
Or saved???
Always assume someone can get their hands on it but truth is nobody cares enough.
You mean like “Thought Police”👮♀️? Nope you are good. Make sure that conversation don’t fall in the wrong hands though. I would actually advise against mentioning anything controversial in written. May come back to bite you. Why take a chance?
If they did, I would’ve been fired and/or arrested years ago.
D1, I don’t think it’s unprofessional to vent to coworkers. They are the ones who can really relate to what you’re going through.
D1 and D2, anyone party to an IM conversation can control S and it will save a version of convo in Outlook. Be careful what you IM, anyone can save and use against you. Best to commiserate with friends over drinks in a location no other consultants go to.
“They” who?
Just use WhatsApp next time!
While firms may not monitor, log, or retain the IM, your coworkers might. Be professional. Period. Vent to outsiders .
Remember that chats/conversations might be saved in your outlook, so once they go there, they might be saved. And while you might have this setting turned off, your coworker might not...
Trust me I would have been canned years ago. Yes they can see all your Skype it's their system. Don't worry about it. If you're worried about getting fired for something you say in chat you clearly aren't showing your value in the project. Unless you harass or say racist shit you're fine
I've heard of that in banking, particularly at the bulge brackets. I believe it was communication over Bloomberg though. Haven't heard of this in consulting
OP, meet me Monday
I know EYs policy is to not retain IM data since they'd have to retain any chats in case of potential litigation which would be costly and expensive to maintain and store. I doubt any other of the Big4 keep/monitor it. Things like Banking have legal requirements to keep this information, like over Bloomberg, but that is because of the government demand.
My (MBB) firm tells us during training that IMs are not logged. Hence anything you wouldn’t want preserved for eternity goes on IM...
D2, OP started by asking if s/he would get in trouble for expressing how little s/he likes the work. If s/he is concerned about that, don’t complain to coworkers.
D1, chances are those coworkers don’t like the work either. So many of my colleagues are jumping ship because of it. We all know there are awful projects/managers out there - it’s by voicing what you like/don’t like doing that you can get the work you want!
