If I hear one more guest say, “It’s just a burger, why is it $18?” I'm going to lose it. Like bro, you’re not just paying for the beef, you’re paying for the cook’s wage, rent, utilities, insurance, local ingredients, and the literal person bringing it to your table. But sure, let’s pretend it’s all about the patty. I try to stay professional, but it gets exhausting explaining this over and over. How do you stay polite when people clearly have no clue how restaurant pricing actually works?

I’ve started replying, “Well, we can lower the price if you help wash dishes.” It’s sarcasm, sure but I’m done coddling people who think food costs haven’t changed since 1998. If you want a $5 burger, go to a drive-thru.

I’m right there with them! Because we aren’t seeing it. Everybody is making the least amount of money legally possible here, which I know I don’t speak for everyone, but I can’t explain that it’s going towards the cooks wage, when the cook is a paycheck away from being homeless.

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
