Houston is amazing and super underrated. Lived their most of my life, super diverse, great food, and lots of great museums and things to do, only drawback is the heat and potentially less job options depending on which industry you’re focused in, but great COL and lots of culture and things to do!
C6, totally agree.
Over 30 Los Angeles is the place to be. New York is alright but la has everything and anything New York has plus more. You want snow 1 hour drive. You want desert 1 hour drive. You wan ocean 1 hour drive. You want a weekend getaway for nightlife you can drive /fly to Vegas for a 2 day social event. San Diego is pretty cool too. I would only choose Houston if you want to save the monies and only monies. If money not an option, LA over everything
My beloved pebble on the sea is tiny. The point was listing series of places. Also note the use of 2 distinct sentences. Anyways - anyone who spent a couple of F1s there will get the point I was conveying in comparison to LAs flashiness.
Chicago
I worked there for about 6 months in a project. Love the city and vibe. Hope the get out there soon
Not familiar with the Houston scene but between NY, LA, and Chi I'd def pick Chicago. Much less toxic in Chicago, lots of great professional opportunities, tons of outdoor things to do when the weather is nice. Even in the winter though there's tons of activities always going on in the city and you'll have a much lower COL.
What would you say some of the better cities to stay in Chicago would be for mid twenties for someone who wants to try to buy a place to live? Maybe a smaller type condo for about 200K?
My friends I've talked to aren't huge fans of LA. The traffic and spread out nature of everything are real turnoffs for them that you have to deal with everyday. No central downtown, and meeting up anywhere takes an hour of driving one way.
Do people uber around when they go out then? Or do they have designated drivers?
Did NY and LA already. Setting sails to London or Paris next.
Oh yea
NYC. Current Chicago here, former NYC resident. Based on your criteria, NYC is leagues beyond any of these. Chicago is great to settle down in, not be single in. All my friends in their early 30s that are single say the same, and stayed in NYC. All us taken folk have migrated to the South and Midwest. Also way easier to meet people in NYC.
Respect the take SC1. I can see that. NYC is definitely a hook up culture, far more so than Chicago. I think if you’re looking and available, you can easily find the right people in NYC (met my SO through intramural soccer, one buddy met his wife at a dive bar), but you can easily meet the wrong people (friends had a terrible time in apps, clubs). NYC definitely attracts more people from far over rather than a strong Midwest pull in Chicago so you get more variety in NYC (SO and I are both Midwesterners which is why we came back). IMO Chicago has slimmer pickings and people are far more serious and looking for XYZ rather than open to where life takes them. Just one guy’s opinion.
Houston mf Texas hoe.
And here we have the native stan 🤣🤣
New York. I wish I’d started there when I was young. It is so competitive there that most people who exit are way beyond everyone else.
1 to 1.5 performance cycles
Dallas is far better than Houston imo. Better crowd, less crime, nice weather.
Chicago. Moderate cost of living. Dense, with good public transit so you don't need a car. Singles scene is much more down to earth, with a smaller % of people focused on image, and a larger % of people looking for commitment than NYC or LA. You're 31, so commitment vs fling seeking singles may be a bigger concern for you now than is you were 22.
I started and Chicago and picked LA over NYC. Sooooo glad I did. Access to nature is important to me, I love hiking.
Holy shit are you me? 31M and really want to move to NY or LA after quarantine. Mostly to be around ambitious young people and also having a good social life. COL is a non-issue.
For me it’s been NY 100% always, but recently I’m considering LA. But still just can’t get over the awful traffic and how far apart everything is in LA. Compared to the efficiency and ease of getting around in NY.
At this point wouldn’t even consider any other city in the US. But Maybe some EU cities like AMS, or Paris.
You should also consider Toronto or Montreal
Houston all the way. Cost of living is unbeatable, it’s the most diverse city in the US (google it if you don’t believe me), the food scene is out of this world, lots of opportunities, the weather is better than Chicago or NY (summer is too hot though). Caveat: live IN the city, not the burbs. Tons of young people, good nightlife.
Miami
Any where but NYC.
I’m surprised you didn’t consider Washington DC or Boston in this list. I’ve lived in over 15 cities (yes I moved around a lot), and while I’ve loved NYC, Boston and other smaller cities, DC is great. Good nightlife, lots of young people and good job prospects. If you have to consider a Texas city, I would suggest Dallas over Houston. Lots more jobs in Dallas and it’s definitely a more bustling and vibrant nightlife. I would say Austin, but it’s a smaller town and I don’t think it compares with a larger city imho
Houston
I live in Houston and def love it! I think as long as you’re inside the city (and not the burbs), you’ll have a great time. Chicago is cool too though
NYC, born and raised
