If you live in NYC, get a cheap apartment but spend money on everything outside of it.

Treat it like a hotel. Just sleep there.

You live in the most alive city on earth. So instead of sitting in your home all day, spend your money on:

• experiences worth talking about
• a routine that keeps you moving and healthy
• meeting new people that'll open new opportunities

The whole point of living in New York is to be outside of your room. Your bedroom isn't New York

I’ve lived in NYC for 26 years. Was broke and struggling when I arrived. Am doing relatively well financially now.
And agree conceptually. Although affordability of apartments is a lot harder these days then when I arrived, so easier said than done.

Are you new to the city? The issue isn’t people wanting luxury, the main issue is cost and affordability. Even a “cheap” apartment is over priced and will continue to rise in rent.

like

To get a cheap apartment we are looking at new jersey, which seems like not new York but would allow us to have more money to spend on things in New York.

like

Hoboken is not cheap. Average 1 bedroom is around $3500 and $4000 if near PATH.

like

A cheap apartment is 3k a month unless you spend 24 hours a day searching and being the first person to put a deposit down. Anything cheap is gone in literally 2 seconds

likefunny

If you can even find something for 3k with reasonable commute to work.

like

Grateful to be doing this, somehow rent is $1k for me right now and I use what the realistic difference would’ve been to enjoy my time in New York (and save a bit more).

like

Ahh rip. Honestly sounds like a great deal!

Surprised by so many comments about affordability. Wife and I save over $8k a month and spend 5.6k on rent.

You all need to visit London. New York prices but Mumbai salaries.

Most alive city on earth? 😆 Have you not travelled around Asia yet?

NYC, Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo… don’t need to compete with each other. All different and amazing in their own unique way.

I totally agree!!

It’s cute you think NYC is the most alive city in the world. From a nightlife pov it’s kinda modest in the very late hours

(And no I do live in NYC)

I have an offer and want to negotiate

1. London base salary but I have to absorb all the expenses (train + stay)
I am thinking to negotiate to

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.
