I don’t agree that if they say no, you should move on. There are many reasons why top performers cannot receive a salary increase right away.
You probably should post this in the unemployment bowl and see what kind of response you get. I don’t think it’s as easy to move on as you think. Digital marketing is not that unique of a skill.

Disagree, and that's coming from someone who has never used an offer to try to get more money out of my employer. There are lots of stories in other bowls of people doing this exact thing successfully. It's not something I'd do personally because I tend to agree that it burns a bridge, or at least erodes your trust within your company, but it does happen.

I think it’s a ‘it depends’ situation. I’ve looked at my career as a marathon, not a sprint. I factor in the trajectory of the company as a whole, over my specific salary or role on any given day. Geography of employer is a factor too. I work to a job and moved back to my hometown. Unfortunately that has some weight in deciding to stay or go.
In many cases, the manager may not actually have control over the staffing budgets or be able to approved a raise even if it is merited. I would say, however, that if you have to go to the lengths of applying elsewhere to get and offer so that you can get a raise at your current company; take the offer. Why would you waste all that time and effort + lead on a team that may genuinely want to hire you just to be right back where you were in 2-3 years having to manipulate a company into giving you (justified) raise?
