If you're confident when public speaking or giving instructions how did you get that way? I'm a soft spoken person and more and more I'm noticing myself either softening my tone or adding phrases like "if that makes sense." I think I'm undermining my own authority, how can I stop doing this?

I also use softer phrases like that when I talk, I think it's something women are conditioned to do from a young age. The fact that you're noticing it is step one, next try to remind yourself not to do it!

Start talking to yourself. I'm dead serious. In the mirror, in the car, etc. Practice what you're going to say out loud to yourself until you can hear confidence in your own voice. My voice used to shake when I spoke up to anyone, let alone in front of anyone. Don't give up!

Practice, lots of it. With time, you'll notice changes in your speech and tone. I used to video record myself three times a week without the pressure of performing. In the long run, it really helped me grow in self-confidence.

Honestly just fake it until you make it. I pretended that I was confident enough to give presentations until I did so many that it became natural.

I have a soft voice too and when I speak up I feel like I'm yelling but I'm realizing it's all in my head so I just "yell" to get my point across

How do you deal with imposter syndrome? I'm a new therapist and I work with a bunch of women who have been doing this for ages. Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

How often do you respond to emails from law students who want to learn about your firm/practice area? I get like a dozen requests right around OCI every year. Frankly I’m tired of speaking to them and answering the same boring questions, especially if I know they have a low GPA and no chance of summering at my firm, but I do feel bad saying no/ignoring them

My boss in my creative agency threatened to fire me because I, a male, came into work with my nails painted. HR is having a very complicated day today as I found out I could take legal action if he does fire me since we don't have an established dress code that has any guidelines against male nail polish wearing.

Hello all,

I've just started my new role as HR state manager for a large international law firm.

I'm a male and my admin is female. After working with her for a week and discussing it with my wife, I think my admin is a little smitten for me.

I have no feelings towards her whatsoever and have been nothing but very professional in all interactions.

Was wondering best way to set boundaries from the start?

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

I live in a more conservative city. Does anyone feel like how you perform at work is a reflection of the gay community to your peers? For example, if you’re a bad performer, it’s going to be reflective of the gay community as a whole and could make it harder for the next gay person? Is it weird to think that?

Nine months on the job, 2019 graduate, feeling very ill-equip and self-conscious about making mistakes. Appreciate any advice.

Do I tell her my timeline is now a month, or is telling them I'm getting fired going to tank my chances of getting the job?
