It’s cold in Phx right now. Whatever you do, make sure you bring a heavy jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves. It dips into the low 40s and 30s at night.
Phx is also a hot spot for COVID right now. No one has worn masks since June 2020 and people don’t think covid exists. Expect to be around people who don’t think twice about coughing open mouthed in a room full of people.
If you like stuffy, ignorant and politically incorrect old rich white people and enjoy overpaying for things, visit Scottsdale. Otherwise, there are plenty of other cities to visit. Downtown Phx is up and coming and their nightlife has grown over the past few years. There are a few speakeasy’s around the valley that are fun.
You can do top golf, there’s lots of hiking to do, tons of museums. You could drive north and go sightseeing: Sedona, Grand Canyon, The Wave, horseshoe bend. I’m not sure if the slot canyons on Navajo lands are still closed but there’s also upper and lower Antelope Canyons.
Thanks!! Any specific spots in downtown phx you can call out? The Melrose area looks kind of cool based on the restaurants.
Never been in Phoenix over New Years, but I enjoyed the Musical Instrument Museum, Heard Museum, and Taliesin West. Also, if you’re able, drive up to Sedona for a couple days.
W Scottsdale usually has a NYE party that is fun. Maybe try Talking Stick Resort as well. Other than that can’t go wrong with going to Scottsdale
Was in Scottsdale last weekend. Camelback is a great, challenging hike, and the Deloitte code with Marriott has a fantastic rate at the Camelback Inn if you want to get away for a day. Can’t recommend the spa there enough
I mean, while I appreciate the additional notice of caution, I’m not a huge fan of that hike being presented like this. I will certainly cede the fact that people have died recently out there, but from my understanding, the department has been strictly enforcing the time of day that people undertake the hike during the summer season. The major injuries were by and large not because of the hike’s difficulty, but rather the damning heat and lack of preparation in the summer. Make of that what you will, but the hike is well-guided, and at no point did I feel like there was danger due to the difficulty. As an avid hiker/backpacker, I would say just make sure you are prepared for the weather (was beautiful out last week), there are enough people around if you start getting to uncomfortable points, and ALWAYS avoid going up something if you don’t feel confident you can get back down.
Not meant as an attack on A1 at all, I have just found that the best hikes are the ones that push your boundaries a little bit:)
