You are doing much better than I was doing at 28. The best thing you can do is keep your head up and keep grinding. $70k is still very respectful and know that you’ll make it to six figures in due time.
Thanks friends
I started in consulting 7 years ago, aged 30, as an analyst / grad. I didn’t get promoted for 3 years and my salary stayed at ~$55k for those years (until age 33). I had no savings and could barely afford to put a roof over my head.
I’m now on $230+
Be patient. You’re in a better position than most. And in a few years you’ll be killing it
Also, when I was stuck at my first firm I tried for hundreds of jobs and no one would give me an opportunity be used of my level and hadn’t shown progress. I was depressed and deflated.
Eventually, after a long slog, I actually got a referral to the second company from someone I’d been chatting to the coffee shop near me for months. I told them what I do, the jobs I was going for (my husband was even willing to quit his job and move way out regional for me to get a chance at a job which I ended up not getting final stage because the ceo didn’t think I had enough experience), and he was like “what but you’re amazing - give me your cv I’ll give it someone at firm x”. He was retired and I didn’t know he worked in the same industry.
The rest is history.
Long story, but the moral is that rejection happens often, just believe in yourself, persevere, continue invest in developing skills, and find people who see your value
Look for a job that pays better, maybe relocate. Develop skills that interest you (e.g. SQL course online). Will also say that grass is always greener on the other side, like what if your friends are working insane hours while you have WLB
Yes but I have had a number of recruiters reach out to me specifically because I have a PMP. I got the cert because it falls into the preferred experience of many project manager or similar positions to be more “competitive”

I was 28, making 74k in DC at a Big 4 firm. Left for a $110k opportunity in industry. 3 years later I'm at $162k. Find some people that value you.

Unlike many of the stories you see on fb, I didn't have a recruiter reaching out to me. I had been cold applying to places for 8 months prior to that role, and had been turned down for 4 before getting that offer. Luckily for me, those roles would've only gotten me up to 85-90k. I had only asked for 90k from this job, but they said I was severely underpaid and offered 110. Apparently this manager had been looking for my skillset (generalist consultant) for nearly a year 🤷🏾♂️
It doesn't make sense, I know.
The obvious answer is to get a higher earning job. The better, and less obvious, is not to compare yourself to others. At $70k per year, you’re doing much better than the vast majority.
Damn. Thank u bud

This is such a breath of fresh air from all of the: “I’m 25 and only making $220k, am I failure?” kind of posts. Thanks for sharing
No problem.. I’m a humble man who tries to do the right thing and is just looking for a decent pay bump. Appreciate the time you took to read my complaining and respond.
Balling on a budget is definitely possible. For example, same age and $54k working at a nonprofit until recently, but traveled to 40+ countries with that. Not flexing but just proving it should be possible to do have plenty of fun with $70k. Also have an honest convo with friends about your budget. The right people will understand.
Thank you, project manager 1. That is helpful
I know the feeling well, but don’t pursue it if you can - insecurities like that only drag you further into the rat race. Find out what it is you really want to do, and if part of that is activities with friends, choose which ones you want and make a budget for it. You can have anything you want, just not everything.
This is very sound. Thank you, Facebook 1!
I went back to change my career path so I was an intern at 28, making $25 an hour. It pains me to hear people complain about what is otherwise a decent salary in their twenties. Many people are serving in the military, going to med school, working on PhDs, or in one of many many jobs that pay far less than 70k.
You’ll get there, OP. At all phases of life you’ll see people with more than you— you can’t let it get you down. Life is to be enjoyed.
I think it’s so important to keep things in perspective. Most of the people on this app are making way more than the average person- you are doing great OP! Keep your head up and keep building experience and skills.
I started out at 50k working at a nonprofit and two years later, I landed this consulting position and got a 40% increase. Honestly the only real way to get a large pay increase is to switch companies and find a company that values you. It’s the fastest way to drastically increase your compensation imo.
Thank you so much, BAH! I appreciate it

A month before my 27th birthday, I was making 78k salary. I got picked up by ZS a few days before my birthday at 115k salary. 8 months later got a raise and am now making 130k salary. I was in the same boat... so tired of sweating whether I could do a trip with friends or go to nice dinners or participate in expensive activities. I sweat none of those items now and life has been amazing. Things can change fast... you just need to position yourself in the right industry / firm.
I say all this not to brag but to give you hope as it is absolutely possible to get there and to do so quickly. You got this!
It does give me hope, ZS Associates 1. Thank you king/queen
Learn Salesforce. Get a lot of certifications. Put it on your LinkedIn. Massive shortage of talent. Everyone makes over 6 figs in this industry.
Hello, Salesforce 1. I have some follow up questions and I am going to PM you if you don’t mind 😀
When I was your age I was an architect making $45k, you’ll be fine if you focus on you and not chasing spending status, financial freedom brought by savings will bring much more happiness- hang around people that align w your long term goals, not short term fantasies
I appreciate that Deloitte 3
I had great jobs that paid around that range, even lower. Focus on skills, the money will come once you know it’s time. Stop worrying about other people. Don’t pay too much attention to Fishbowl numbers because the people here are often flexing. It’s healthy to worry, sometimes it can motivate you. A career is a long road.
Marathon not a sprint as they say. Thank you, EY3. I appreciate the time you took to respond.
When I was 28 I made $40k. The next year I went to grad school. 10 years later my TC is $380. Retirement fully funded since even when I made $28k I funded my Roth $5k/year.
You got this OP. Life is long and full of twists.
Thank you, Deloitte 4. I’m optimistic that the universe will be kind to me if I stay humble, hungry, and determined.
Appreciate you
Worked at a boutique firm for 90K firm base , WITCH for 117K firm base, entered Big4 at 148K base + bonus …. That’s over an 8 month period . The come up happens quickly, so stay positive and keep grinding
People be hiring! Congrats!! Don’t stop now
Im early 30s and was at a small company for 4-5 years. I had essentially capped out my earnings in that org at 55k. I just moved to consulting and am starting at 75k with room to grow.
All that to say, everything is relative and be proud of where you are at in your own journey. Like you, all my friends were 6 figs and I felt that “shame.” But remember to be proud of your work and remember that, if you take a step back, you are only 28 with a VERY respectable income. Our careers are still just starting
Thank you so much
You’re doing better than I was at your age. I went back to school around then for SWE before I finally hit my stride. Keep learning and keep your head up!
Fair enough. Here goes nothing!
Not a failure at all man. Doing better than most of the world.
Well that makes me feel sad for most folks. We all deserve more I guess ! Thank u for listening and responding, associate consultant 1
Don’t lose heart. I was right where you were until I turned 30. Things can turn around in an instant!!! Just keep pushing, learning new things, grabbing certs, updating your resume and profile. You’ll get your chance. And until then, it’s like my mom says, ‘It’s not what you make, it’s what you do with it.’
Thank you, KPMG. I just need to do my best and the rest will follow. Currently studying for my PMP!
