First and most important question: just how big a book we talking?
(I was the first Black male associate at a midlaw shop in Upstate South Carolina. Super "southern" vibes. One of the best places I've ever worked; consider probing a lil bit more. They might not know how to love you right yet, but they may be willing to learn).

Good luck! If you take it, make sure the billing credit is going to you and not somebody else w you just working it. I'd also ask if it's possible to get an intro to the client contact (firm might insist on this happening after you accept). If it looks good and you're getting the credit, you'll be running a midsized law firm in a few years. Best wishes!
For some additional context: the partner who is leaving and who the book belongs to mentioned how the local office thinks some of the home office’s initiatives are “cute” and gave the example of “things like diversity.”
Not sure how he thinks that is selling me.
Unrelated to diversity, they also said they like to be in the office 5 days/week despite the firm having a 3/2 policy and most folks in other offices using the chances to WFH.
sounds like good experience but I’m very wary of the “southern” feel. do you know if the clients in the book are like that too?
Update: I chose not to go to this firm and chose the firm where I’d be working for a partner who has a similar background as me (same minority and grew up in the US) - the firm is bigger and has had its own issues with diversity but after speaking with a few current and former associates, they’ve been making an effort to improve that, and have, over the past few years.
Associates seemed to be nice enough and reached out to a diverse associate separate of they formal process who seemed nice too. Still weary that the book will pay out as much.
The last associate I spoke to solely works on the departing partners book, so not sure how much of the billable hours I can take from them (the hours billed component is the highest payout under the comp model).
Another concern (if it rises to that level) is that the office never shut down during covid. I was told multiple times they all kept going in everyday. This was to tell me how tight-knit they are but….sorry regardless of where we are on the political spectrum (my guess is most lean right in this office), I’m not sure that’s a positive for me.
Hoping I have another option but if not really struggling with this one.
