I'm a late 20s Gyopo desiring to work in Korea to learn language/culture for up 3 years (legal limit until age 37). Don't want my future kids to be twinkie like me. Want your thoughts on detail below.

Hi, I'm in consulting and in late 20's as well.

I came to the states from Korea to study abroad in 2015 after completing my military service. I was attending a national university then transferred to an US state school and did my BS and MS in a relatively short period of time, so I have good sense in both countries' culture as well as how job markets in Korea and working there might look like going forward. Feel free to DM me if you'd like to talk further.

On me: So my Korean is super basic and I have 4 years of B4 consulting, <1 year of internal consulting. Don't know what my future career would ideally be.

1. What job can I actually get with limited Korean ability that will also force me to use Korean heavily? I can brainstorm startup, maybe Korean MNC branch. Did 학원 강사 for 4 months in 2015 and it didnt help as much as I wanted.

2. I imagine my career trajectory will be sacrificed for this 3 year period since I wont be able to get desirable jobs. Thinking I'll go MBA after - how could taking this sub optimal job affect me for MBA / going back to "real workforce"?

3. Generally - any thoughts on this course of action? Too costly? May not having lasting effect?

This would be an indication of my writing for context.

Do you feel like you have to go to Korea to learn Korean? Anything less drastic like plugging in to a Korean community in your area?

It seems that like you’re thoughtful thinking things through. I would recommend that if you do decide to move to Korea, just avoid places like Itaewon. I know that’s not your goal but I’ve seen many friends shift to what is “familiar” once they’re already there.

another 교포 here. your writing seems much higher than basic. i get that you want to immerse yourself in the korean language and culture to become super fluent, but you seem pretty proficient already.

if you don't want your kids to be twinkie, will you raise them in korea? and in the meantime, are you doing things like reading the korean newspaper or listening to kbs news everyday?

Thank you for the kind words - I certainly dont think I can use the word proficient but I do give it a try. I keep the news on when I work and read an article (I still struggle getting through one) from time to time. Definitely absorbing words and phrases that way. I think the missing half is speaking and writing, perhaps it might be using that constantly at work/life to push the needle there. If I stay in SG, I can consider a tutor too. Havent had experience but that is 1 way.

I dont have kids yet so not sure but that's a thought. Ideally could spend a few years there at min but I'd have to wait until 37 to start a long-term career move. Have friends who did only middle school there for example and that really made its mark for their skill as a reference point. Have you considered?

I made a mistake. I talked with the ex this morning. He said he misses me. And that while he walk talking to the other woman, he wished he was talking to me instead. And when he saw that I didn’t respond to his texts, he drank a shit ton. And then called this morning.

He’s not willing to commit to the other women because he’s not over me.

I need to block him.

Let’s say you have two young, high income partners in a couple who want to buy a house together but don’t really care to get married. They already live together in an apartment but both want to move to a house to build equity and have a yard, not share walls, etc. Should one partner buy the house and the other pays rent until they get married, or should they get a mortgage together without being married? I realize there isn’t a “right” answer but I’m interested in people’s experiences here.

Instead, turn it into a question like “does someone need a time out?” Much less confrontational that way.

Now that they're 4+ everything is big stuff, and every time I can't be there it really affects them. Would it be hard to get a exp associate role in advisory at a B4 as someone with about 10 months in audit at EY, 7 months experience in corporate accounting at a F300 and CPA? Hated my time at the F300 but had thought the grass would be greener in industry. I’m starting a financial analyst position at a major hospital system in my area soon and want to stick with that for a couple years before making a transition but was curious if I just don’t have the right experience for a role in advisory.

Thinking of switching employers.
