I know they say you burn bridges if you leave during a busy time, but how should that really sway my decision to leave? I want to change industries and move to another city. I’m looking for jobs but am worried it’ll take until late fall/winter to lock something down and my group is already busy at that time.

After hearing about lots of people getting laid off with a days notice (although they get severance) even after they had been there for 8 + years I don’t think I’d feel as bad anymore. The company is doing what is in their best interest so you should do what’s in your best interest. I’d feel more bad for the team and so I’d do as much as I can to help them out in those last 2 weeks.

2 weeks notice. That's customary. If a position comes during an unfortunate time, then it sucks but you shouldn't pass on it because your group is "busy".

like

Anyone’s who’s not a dick won’t be mad as long as you give your customary notice and don’t slack of during that period

like

It's about HOW you leave not WHEN you leave. If you "check out" for a month before you tell anyone you're leaving and make no effort to transition your work, then yes, you will burn bridges. I've also seen people leave on very good terms in the middle of busy season because they worked to transition their projects smoothly.

I recently lateraled into Big Law. Most of my colleagues are homegrown. My shift did involve a big change in practice area, and there's work that I haven't done before that I now have to do.

But, sometimes I feel stupid here, even for work which I have done previously. It's like I'm unable to understand instructions the first time around. And I have seen my colleagues getting annoyed by that. It's like I've become dumb. In my defence, I could say they're giving half assed instructions.

I’m graduating in December, with a background in environmental economics and policy. Consulting didn’t work out this cycle. Made it to final rounds for Bain and Kearney but in the end didn’t get an offer. I want to recoup and try again, but I’m worried that once I’m out of undergrad the door will be closed to starting in consulting.

What can I do to make this happen? I have friends and connections at Bain and Kearney and the other firms as well, but not sure if it’s feasible now.
