I’ve been in the legal profession since 1976. I’ve worked for great employers until 2004, when I had an accident and the doctors forbade me to return to work for enough time that I had to be replaced. Since then when I was able to return to work I spent 4 1/2 years with someone who screamed and belittled me every day. This employer was a miser, who, between screaming, was scheming to foil any attempt i might make for a raise (and i was sorely underpaid from the start).
I finally found a better paying job, which turned into another nightmare because one paralegal, known for being a problem of person, decided I was her next victim, especially since her boss would comment nice things about me. She became worse with every kind thing he said about me. Meanwhile, I was so intimidated by that woman I was a nervous wreck and had trouble learning the job (it was in the personal injury field, which I hadn’t done for many years). I never was provided a chance there. After many interviews that went well and I wasn’t chosen I realized it was my age, once a prospective employer found out. I don’t look anywhere near my age; men my daughter’s age look like old men compared with me.
When I finally came back at the woman who was exerting extreme mental torture on me, telling her to stop picking on me and that she is toxic (which everyone knew because I was told the first day I worked there) they let me go. They are afraid of her so they let me go after I did a lot of good there and was conscientious as I’ve always been.
After another job I took, after the boss saw my age on my I-9, she screamed “Oh my God,” and left the office and had her assistant tell me I wasn’t a good fit (after a couple hours of everything being just fine). I was paid for three days’ shut up money and I left.
I have noticed all of the employers with whom I have interviewed or for whom I have worked have a constant revolving door of employees who they hire and let go on a regular basis. I have never in all my years had a bad experience until I began working for the “screamer” and all subsequent experiences. I might add that I’m the easiest, most accommodating employee on the planet. And at this point in my career can confidently say that. Legal has degraded from a once honorable profession into a profession of heartless creatures.
You obviously can handle whatever department they assign you. Would using it for a salary or bonus increase make the situation more tolerable?
