I lateraled about six months ago and my hours have been abysmal. I didn’t get a talking to until this month, so they gave me some time to get going. I just can’t for the life of me get staffed on deals that don’t immediately die.

I’m in M&A
I could have written this post myself. Lateraled 2.5 months ago as a 3rd year cap markets and billing has been super low. Still getting used to everything and sometimes asking juniors “dumb questions.”
I’ve been told many many times by managing partners not to worry about hours but it’s hard. Trying to get myself into VC and M&A work so to diversify.

That’s normal. I’m not a senior associate but I lateraled 2.5 months ago and am finding it difficult to adjust to new firm conventions, learning who the important contacts are, which firms we farm work out to, where the coffee is kept on in-office days, how the document management system works, partner and counsel preferences, how work is delegated… be patient with yourself. Going to any new firm is a huge adjustment. Better to do good quality work and slowly ramp up your hours than to be giving a bad first impression because your hours are high and your work product gets out fast but it’s sloppy or not well thought out. You can recover from low hours but not from being perceived as the sloppy senior associate

I'm a senior who lateraled early this year and it's taken about 6 months to be regularly busy (lit)

When does the next performance cycle start?
November 1st, so I've kind of been using that as my benchmark to be billing at full capacity.

I’d say 4-6 months, maybe longer.
