1. This is hard and I’m sorry you’re in this situation. I think the best things you can do are prioritize, delegate, and set boundaries. Out of all the tasks they give you, prioritize the most important or time sensitive ones to complete first - you’ve only got so many hours in a day. If there are other staff or seniors on your team, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Try to delegate any tasks that you don’t have to be the one doing yourself (maybe help train the new senior to do some of these tasks). Lastly, set boundaries. The next time your manager/leadership tries to give you more stuff to do, remind them that you are already taking XYZ responsibilities and ask them how they think you should prioritize this new task. This is a polite way of telling them to back tf off.
2. While this is an uncomfortable situation to be in, this is an EXCELLENT example of your business case for a promotion/raise. Take note of your responsibilities, acting as a senior, training the senior, etc. Discuss this with your counselor to let them know how you’ve been performing
Thank you for this amazingly thoughtful response EY1, I think this is the best way to go forward without me burning out or causing any sort of conflict to the project or team… I needed this, thanks again!
Similar position I am in. New senior consultant on my team is nearly useless. I’m carrying the team (it’s just me and him) And he always needs help. I try to give him the easy tasks but I’m overwhelmed. What do I do?
Have you considered asking for raise? Or if they workload is too much you can simply tell your manager that you need more help to have these things done, you alone are feeling very overwhelmed.
Thanks PM1, yes I think I need to be more vocal about my situation.
