Hi everyone!
Debating between an offer from 200 employee company vs Zoom (the company).
The smaller company has good benefits, great wlb and a great culture per Glassdoor reviews. But its an HR software and not easy to sell.
Compensation is similar.
Never worked in a big company like zoom before, what are the pros, and the drawbacks?

At 30, I was making ~$80-95k / yr as a Sr Strategist (3-4 yrs into the biz) in the Midwest and probably only had $20-30k between a 401k, IRA, and a Roth IRA. Guesstimating because it’s been 20+ years. Also, keep that in mind for comparison.
That said, I cannot stress this enough… get comfortable with maxing out your contributions to 401ks and Roth IRA. EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.
Be ruthless with getting use to living on less early on, so you can have a lot more later on.
I haven’t been part of a big agency or in a position to invest in either for years now after “aging out” of FTE roles. But because I contributed the max for my first 15 years in the business, compounding returns, and increases in the stock market, I have over $1M now.
Not enough to retire comfortably YET, but is at least a solid foundation to help me get by. And I still have another 10+ years to work.
👏👏👏
Comparison is the thief of joy
Not comparing. Nobody has ever spoken to me about it, so trying to understand
At 30:
Income $150k
401k $10k ish
At 40:
Income $500k
401k $250k
Other investments plus emergency fund $400k
Started late, got divorced, and had to catch up a lot, but feeling pretty good about where I’m at tbh.
In CX, the in-house agency at Meta.
Turned 30 in January! I make ~200k a year and have 250k in my 401k/roth Ira and 35k in brokerage
At 30 52k and about 17k in the 401k
I’m 30 (no longer at Ogilvy) - I make $100k and have $16k in retirement savings
This was 15 years ago but I had just gotten my first cd role and was at 215k I think. My 401k maybe had 100 in it? Not sure.
$165 salary
$250k in 401k + Roth
Do not sleep on Roth.
Agree - do the Roth IRA in addition to 401k as long as you can. There are income limits with Roth, check those. I’m in a similar boat as some other posters who have diligently saved and seeing the rewards now, years later. I was on the low salary end for a long time, but still contributed the max. Looking back, I lived simply in those early years — it didn’t seem to matter — still had fun without spending a ton. And now I have peace of mind knowing if something happens, I’ll be okay. Worth it imo. Understand not for everyone.
How do people’s 401K & roths balloon so fast?
I’m 25. Make 100k, 32kin 401k, 15k in Roth IRA. Are ya’ll doing more than employee match?
I already max out my Roth IRA, but I don’t feel like I can swing maxing out my 401k until I pass a couple of life markers, paying for a wedding and purchasing a home, which I’m saving about 45% of my paycheck in a HYSA for. I hope to be able to do that by the time i’m 28. After that It’s full steam ahead! Thanks for the advice and especially the framework CD3!
At 30 I think $140,000 or so. I don’t think I had much at that time. I bought a house at 31 so started saving more after I had that out of the way. I have around $500,000 in it now at 39.
at 30 I had zero dollars cuz I was in school, now 8 years later being a managing copywriter make 50k and $0 in savings.
I was making $50k a year. My 401k had to be withdrawn due to a family emergency, so I sat at around $2,000 in there.
I’m 30 and salary is $155k
And 401k is $100k
About to turn 30. $115k salary and should have between $43-45k in my 401k around my birthday. I know I'm behind (started late, focused on student loans first), but am contributing ~$1350/month between me and employer match, so should be caught up and then some in about 7 years unless the market goes to hell in a handbasket
I’m not sure if this applies to most in this bowl. I have a masters from a top school, I’m analytics in an agency, and I can code.
At 29 I was 100k in HCOL area.
At 30 I was 175k (new job) with 200k in IRA/401k.
At 35, my retirement savings is 380k. It compounds fast. I know it is hard but you must max out your 401 contributions. I was prioritizing as soon as I could.
In 2000, I was making 65k and had maybe 15k in my 401k.
At 30 I was making 60k. I only had like 2k saved but had 14k of debt.
I’m 37 now and I make 130k. I have 42k saved and no debt. Not a lot but definitely an improvement.
$130k salary and about $85k in 401k
$95k in 2016, roughly $40k in retirement
I don't remember what I had at 30, but currently with 15 years experience as a senior designer, I make $69k, and have $23K in my 401K
At 30, I made 40K plus bonus in an agency startup. I had zero saved. I’m 63 now. I’m doing okay.
29 140k
200k in my retirement
69k in stocks
3k in cash
