I’m causally looking into a legal recruiting job (coming from big law), but don’t know a ton about it. If anyone here is a legal recruiter, what is your day to day like? Are you paid on all commission or a combo base plus commission (or something else)? Is it possible to earn similar to a junior associate big law salary? What sort of hours do you work? Do you enjoy it? Any other info would be helpful as well. TIA!

Days vary and successful recruiters usually put in a decent amount of work 10-7 is not uncommon if you’re busy, but summer months are usually slower and you can enjoy the summer. Some of the larger recruiting firms do pay a base salary and some smaller ones are strictly commission based. I have to add that the notion that this is as easy way to make good money isn’t really true. It will be a lot of cold calling or emailing in the beginning and then it will get a little easier. There is also a ramp up in understanding the small important differences between different firms. Feel free to send me a message if you want and I can try and shed more light on everything

What market? I may be able to put you in touch with someone to chat with

Hi! I’m so glad I made the change! I work so much less, so much less at stake and easily make as much as an Am Law 5th year associate working about 20 hours a week. There’s never an emergency, I can make my own hours. It’s fun, it’s basically helping attorneys find a better opportunity and chatting all day.

We are also all commission, and industry standard is 50%. So if I make $600K in placements, that’s about 8-10 placements a year, I take home $300K.

I have been doing this for nearly a decade and have never worked 20 hours per week - well once, when I had a baby and still made a placement the week after she was born. But good job to the recruiter who is able to pull it off and still make $300k :)

Hello All,

I have job joining in UST in next. However, I'm having some concern. Could you please advise me on this.

I have some matrimonial disputes going on in court. Does it affect my job joining in UST?

I believe it's the employees personal matter and nothing to relate on job prospects (this is what i got as a reply from my previous employer)

Do I need to inform about my matrimonial disputes or should I keep quiet? How does background verification team consider this.

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.

I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research? I'm so bored and I want to quit but I don't know if I have unrealistic expectations.

Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. Bit of a niche topic: I’ve been in TS/SCI processing for a Science/Tech/Weapons analyst position with the CIA for 3 yrs since I finished grad school in chemistry, but CIA positions are sort of set it and forget it since they can take so long. I’ve since been focused on a Patent Attorney track and am with a firm that will support me taking the patent bar/law school. If I get through processing and go to the CIA for some time, do you think would I be accepted back into patent law later on?

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work.
