First, congratulations! :) Have they already extended the offer to you? Contact HR and ask them to clearly outline all of your potential benefits, including the maternity leave policy. If it’s not something you would qualify for as a new employee, I’d consider letting them know that you’re pregnant and negotiating maternity leave as part of your employment terms. You’d probably need to tell your supervisor pretty quickly anyway if you took the job (absences for doctor’s appointments, etc). Honestly, the way they react to your exciting news may tell you a lot about whether this is a company you’d like to work for. Best of luck!
If you live in NYC you qualify for paid family leave regardless of your employers policy
Ask to receive a copy of all HR policies and benefits so you can take a look yourself if you qualify
It has! They now offer 4 weeks paid. It was just implemented last year.
I was in same position was you a couple of years a go. The opportunity was too good to pass up and i took 6 mos off.
I know woman who have successfully negotiated to be covered with the benefit before accepting an offer even though the policy states something like 1 year of employment. I've also heard (but can not confirm this one) women negotiate longer paid leave. 4 weeks? I hope that is additional time after STD leave (6-8 weeks). My company increased their paid leave to 16 weeks a year ago. And many companies in Financial Services offer similar leave benefits.
Squeeze tight and hold the baby in a few more months?
Great advice! Thank you for your thoughtful responses and well wishes.
How is FH’s maternity leave policy? Used to work there and heard it’s improved drastically the last 2-3 years. If it’s less than a 20% pay increase, I’d consider staying put for the short term to maintain some stability before & after leave.
Do it! Your brain is not carrying.. you can work and honestly it is none of their business. Congrats!
