It’s ebbs and flows. It’s not always non stop work but there are times where it’s tough… imagine just working and jumping from one deal to another with a bunch of requests. You need to manage up to seniors and check work of analysts.
Majority of the time the weeks are manageable 60-75 hours a week… but the 80-110 hour weeks or periods can make you hate your life and push you to a breaking point.
So it’s really more about grit, endurance and stamina than anything. The job itself is not hard. Just demanding seniors or clients and excessive iterations and unreasonable deadlines are what cause 14-16 hour days. I had a 14 day stint of going to bed at 5-7am and waking up at 9-10.
All this to say. It only happens probably once a quarter or 2-3x a year it gets this bad. But just be expected to be “on call” all the time when it comes to work. Work comes first mentality.
I will say I still like the job after 2 years.. but I’m becoming jaded in other ways and it’s a function of the people and my managers and not actually the job
All this to say I think you should still pursue it if this is something you want to do long term. You learn a lot in this industry but be prepared to sacrifice your a bit of your personal life/social life and health because there will be weeks where you can’t go to the gym because you’re just working all day. So ask yourself what you want and what motivates you : makes you happy. For me, it was learning and money early on. Put in the work early so I can use that capital and money to invest and build wealth and other income streams
Really well said from IB analyst 1. Could not have better described it myself.
Lol at 14 hr days. Try 15-16 hours standard
It’s not bad at all to be honest, the only difficulty is sitting in one place that long and dealing with a-holes. The job is not hard, just the people.
Honestly if most of your day is waiting on comments I assume you’re an analyst or junior associate. I find most of my time is spent on process management, talking to buyers / walking them through the sell-side model, managing DD, etc. I’m generally the one giving comments and then making sure anything from the seniors gets reflected by the analyst(s). Normally if I’m in the materials myself it’s to help get things done faster / I have a specific format in mind that I don’t want to have to draw out / it’s a page with some complicated analysis the analyst hasn’t done before.
I have only worked for less than a year, but I have never spent time just waiting for comments - there is always some thing that needs to get done. Where does this come from? And… 14 hours a day would be a dream. I have no joke averaged 17 since I started.
lol stop lying to yourself
