I'm grateful to have a job, but I'm over my current role, and I no longer feel challenged. I have a mixed bag of experience, but I don't feel like I have fundamental product manager skills.

Has anyone had success working with a career coach? For the first time in years, I'm completely clueless re: my next career.

Yes, I was on a similar trajectory a couple of years ago and I hired a career coach. Changed my whole life (professional and personal). I cannot recommend it in stronger terms.

When I was 26 I spent around $300 on a career coach, and it changed my life. I had the wrong ideas about what should be considered when making a job choice. I made a lot of judgments based on things I like but wasn't particularly skilled at professionally.

like

Are you able to share who you worked with?

Yes, it really helped to have someone I could share my indecisiveness/cluelessness with and get constructive advice. Plus it saved me a lot of googling and the turmoil of finding motivation to do that.

My career coach helped me focus on the skills I liked using and the kind of work I wanted to perform. One year into a new job, and I couldn't be happier. I wouldn't call it my passion, but even so, I'm generally happy with work and earning more money than previously.

Several colleges and institutions provide alumni with career counseling services, either through their alumni association or career services office. You might find it more affordable than the open market if that's a possibility for you.

Two times—once when I was facing a tough situation at work and once when I was thinking about changing careers. Both times, it was quite effective. I had a hard time figuring out the best course of action on my own. Having someone else to talk to who helped clarify my thinking worked wonderfully.

Are you able to share who you used?

I have. It can really help to get you started down the right path to have an independent person to bounce ideas off of, overcome any mental obstacles with, and work on a precise action plan of doable actions each week.

Thanks for the responses. Can anyone provide the name of their coach?

I’m early in my career and feeling this way as well. I feel as though I’ve picked this career for the money and not for passion but struggling to discover what I would be passionate about doing. I never thought of working with a career coach. Please share any you have worked with!

So I have an offer pending but I still have 2 more interviews left for another role that I would like, on Monday. I need to get back to the recruiter by tomorrow on the offer. How bad would it be to accept and then renege later? Even if the second role offers me a position, it would be at least another week at earliest and I can’t delay the first offer any longer.

Would you guys consider leaving for a role that offers a much higher base salary but no opportunities to advance? Got an offer that’s an 85% raise adjusted for cost of living. The work seems interesting and I like the company but it’s a smaller office so I basically couldn’t get promoted unless my boss retires or quits.

Hi fishes, I was tapped for an internal transfer to the research division of our company. I was lucky to be made a manager in my current workstream w/ only 2 years of experience (typically takes 4-10). The new dept originally offered me an managerial role based on that, but after speaking with higher ups, said they can’t give me a managerial role because of parity issues with other members of the team. The new comp offered with the analyst grade is only peanuts above my current pay. Advice?

I work at a Financial Institution and have recently been approached about a Director role with my prior company. It’s a great opportunity but I have 2 young kids (Preschool/Elementary ages) and I don’t want to sacrifice time with them for career advancement. I would love to hear from working moms in senior leadership roles to understand if it’s possible to balance both, or is it best to wait a few more years? Not happy currently and looking to move, but unsure of pursuing lateral vs. a promotion

Hi Fishes,

I have joined one of the top 4 Indian private bank as a Campaign Manager in 2019, after 3 years of campaign management I recently got into a product Manager role to learn PM Skills. However, 1 month into the new role I realised that there's no scope to learn PM Skills other than basic Project management. Request your suggestions & referrals to move into proper Prod Man role. Am open for any course suggestions too🙂

My final round with Deloitte for UK Tech Consulting Manager position soon. Strangely it’s not a PMD round as it usually is for other Big4/tech consulting firms.
1. Can anyone tell me if they’ve been through the whole process without speaking to PMD? (First round Sr Manager, second Case Interview by a manager and third again by a manager) 2. What is a typical salary to expect? I was asked in screening but kept it vague (e.g can discuss later bla bla). I was hoping 75-80 (ridiculous?)

New fish looking for career guidance.

I'm a corporate recruiter with 3 years of experience. Finishing my degree in HRM 5/2022. I'm thinking of getting my SHRM -CP shortly after graduation.

I'm not sure of where to go after that, but I doubt I will stick with recruiting or my current firm.

Has anyone here started off in recruiting and branched out to other HR functions? Do you like your new role? Do you wish you stuck with recruiting?
