I think certifications are becoming a base level requirement to get your foot in the door. I also feel that the old adage “you have to know the rules to know how to break them” also comes into play because a strong PM knows how it all fits together in an ideal world. Once you have the foundations then managing projects in the real world which is imperfect and has constant trade offs allows you to make decisions with an understanding of how it impacts the rest of the project.
I’d start with the CAPM as it will give you a good taste of the theory.
No worries at all. It’s probably important to state that these certs focus on a waterfall delivery approach but if you are in tech and working with teams who deliver products via Agile methodology then it’s still handy to have traditional PM theory under your belt but how it gets applied is different. Regardless I would still recommend CAPM as a starting point.
