I would say the NYC market is rough right now. It's a market defined by large holding company shops who are all struggling. There are, of course, exceptions. But even the few sizeable Indies are hitting headwinds. My sense is that there is a surplus of local talent who are trying to stay. This probably puts you at a disadvantage as hiring local talent is cheaper. Don't beat yourself up. And keep trying. NYC will rebound. It always has. It's a great place to call home.
No, it's not practical. But neither is LA, or advertising.
What appeals to you about living in NYC? If you're a dude, you will have at least five chicks trying to get up in your personal biz at any given time. To be happy in NYC you need a steady income (at least $120k, unless you want a roommate) and a surplus of energy (doing laundry is a major life event). If you are willing to do pharma you might find work. Sublet your place and try it short term on your own dime.
I agree with Sr. AD. I came from NY to LA and my experience was that it’s a lot more cut throat and more burnout but good experience. An interesting option may be to try and freelance out there and Airbnb it for a bit or see if you can find someone to do a housing swap
Move to NYC! Tough is good. Why always stay in comfort zone. People who are brave and like changes grow faster than who are afraid
