I wonder if this a year 5ish phenomenon or if the practice of law has gotten significantly worse post COVID and with the total creep of technology. More seasoned attorneys speak of bygone days where they would meet opposing counsel and discuss cases and settlement, and all I get our nasty emails ; they also don’t have the same discovery nightmares of today with ESI and email comms. There’s many more stores I’ve heard. While I’m not sure the grass was greener 20 plus years ago, the practice of law today (in some practice and some jurisdictions) has been hellish.
100%. Plus I think with technology, tasks take less time so there’s also a pressure to take on more and more cases - and with it more and more deadlines and stress. For example, 30 years ago you’d need to use hard copy reporters to draft briefs; now everything is at your fingertips and it probably takes like 1/4 of the time. So you need 4x the caseload to hit billables. I think it’s unsustainable.
Totally normal—year 5 is when the novelty fades, but the pressure doesn’t. You’re not alone in feeling stuck between competence and exhaustion. It might be time to explore lateral moves, in-house options, or even ways to re-engage with the work through mentorship or a different focus area.
This doesn’t go away. You need to reframe how you think about work.

Depending on the area of law you’re practicing in, there will always be clients in need of service for their matters, be it civil or criminal in nature. This can mean that more deadlines, emergencies and billing pressures are to be expected. The question is how you choose to handle these challenges. You’re only one person and you have to set priorities. Sometimes, you may need to turn potential clients away. I’ve had to do that, but I try to at least provide referrals to other attorneys that could assist the client. I don’t like to leave anyone hanging.
