I’m joining a specialty lit practice being grown out with some lateral partners, but there are only a couple associates in it. Would this be good for partnership chances long-term?

Depends on how much business those lateral partners have and whether you are able to form strong client relationships.

This, and also whether what's driving the growth is sustainable long term or just reactive to the current market. It's typically easier to lateral and build business (ie make partner) as an expert vs. a general commercial litigator. I think general commercial lit is one of the the worst practices to be in for someone looking to lateral or make partner.

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.
