I’ve been there...buckle up because 3 months is not a long time. As long as you’re still employed, relax and prep mentally for a long search. Switching industry/function is extremely difficult. Are you also trying to change geographies? My advice is to focus on changing only one of the above (industry *or* function) and revise your resume so your previous experience resembles your desired role as much as possible. You want to come across as an experienced candidate who can show recruiters you can do the job on your resume and prove it in interviews. Remember you may be competing with candidates who have done the exact same job previously and are a much easier sell. Also, it may help consulting with an interview coach. It could be that you need to work on how you’re answering questions and confirm you’re communicating your achievements in the right language/jargon for your target role, company culture, etc. This is all from my personal experience...happy to elaborate more if you want to chat directly.
Last one was the biggest blow. I felt like my background was a perfect match (it was a position in my current function)... It’s been three month and I don’t know how many more rejections I can take...
Thanks A1. That’s kind of what I figured. At this point in my career, it’s incredibly difficult for me to change industry/function. So I have recently decided to keep my function (relatively industry agnostic) but change my industry (to tech). Not looking to change geographies. I have also hired an interview coach. Also if keeping my function, I’m looking to come in as a VP or head of my function, reporting directly to CXO which significantly reduces # of opportunities. I might take up on your offer. I can use all the help/advice I can get!
Given your context that definitely makes sense. I would add that companies might be hesitant to take a career switcher in at a leadership level. Also, try as much as possible to avoid recruiters entirely: network and get warm intros to the companies you want to work for and if you can, a warm intro directly to the CXO office. From my experience, recruiters look for candidates who complete their check lists and they don’t think outside the box. They won’t (maybe can’t) evaluate if you can do the job even though you don’t have the exact qualifications they want on paper. But a potential future colleague/employee/manager on the team would, and if they refer you, the recruiter conversation is more likely to be a formality than an active screen. Not very different from selling a consulting project- you’d try to get an intro directly to the functional buyer and make the pitch to them vs. an unrelated admin. You may already have been doing this and apologies if any of this is repetitive. Bottom line just keep going, it will take time but you have the privilege of being selective.
