Rising Star
16 years of experience and awards here. Not getting interviews either.
It’s the moment. It’s not you.
I felt like this earlier in my career. I had worked for a few years with no broadcast experience. I jumped from a larger market to a smaller one to get my foot in the door at a big agency and things turned around significantly. There’s no direct path but I think being super open to relocation can help get you the right opportunity and pay dividends down the road.
The relocation advice is spot on. If you know the kind of work you're looking to make, you need to be willing to pick up and move to anywhere that'll get you closer to making that kind of work. Especially when you're first starting out.
What experience do you need? I’m worried I’m falling behind too
Felt like this constantly earlier in my career, but it’s come back again as I’m looking for jobs now. It’s part the insane pool of talent looking for jobs now, and part blind spot of CDs and higher who tend to examine you only on the work you’ve done and not trying to see your process and how it could transition to the role at hand.
Try to call out and emphasize in your interviews how what you’ve done directly translates to what the job would entail. I did [insert role here] on this project, similar to how I would approach [insert responsibility of role you’re interviewing for] by [insert process or approach here].
