I interviewed for a similar role last year, and sustainability initiatives and zoning laws definitely came up! I was also asked about community engagement strategies and how to balance economic development with historic preservation. Mixed-use developments were a big focus too. I’d suggest brushing up on local policies,it really helped me!
Any of those issues sound like things that would come up. What I'd suggest would be to do some research. If you're not that familiar with the city so far, go on its web site and read up on what they've been dealing with and what recent and current initiatives are. And go to Google News and look up what's been happening. Also, some municipalities will have a YouTube channel where they post the city council meetings and various public forums, those could tip you off to what the hot issues might be. Ideally you would walk into the interview more or less up to speed on specific issues and topics relevant to the position.
Look over the municipality’s current comprehensive plan and land use plan. Be prepared to explain how you can play a role in making those plans happen. Also be ready to ask questions regarding the plans.
