I’m really mad at the state of the economy in the U.S. right now. I’m working hard and not making enough money. More work same pay because restaurants are struggling. Inflation is up so badly. I feel broke and angry. How’s everyone else feeling?

I'm sorry you're feeling that way. I can relate, especially because I went to school for a couple of semesters and still owe over $10,000 for a degree I don't have. It feels like the debt will never end. I recently massively downsized my life and moved in with a couple of roommates. I didn't think I would have to do that at this point in my life, but it's actually not that bad. I've also cut back on a lot of unnecessary spending, which is helping me pay off my loans faster. I know it's hard right now, and it feels a little bit helpless and frustrating, but life is short, and we can't let things outside of our control make us miserable. Joy and happiness are rebellious acts of resistance against a system we can't control.

We are all screwed. There is no hope. We will all work until we die. I wish I had a better outlook.

Lower your standards of comfort and pinch pennies. Don't buy things you don't need. Shop at thrift stores and flea markets. Don't smoke, don't Starbucks, limit dining out. Carpool, public transit. Get a 2nd or 3rd job. Do all of this while you're young and when you're in your late 40's you can resent doing these things because there wasn't enough joy in your life.

Seriously though, be smart with your money but make time to develop meaningful relationships.

Don't have kids. If it's too late, then be a good parent. A good parent isn't perfect, but they strive to be and that's what makes the difference.

Be well🦝

I know! I am working two jobs, one full time job and one part job. Plus, I am driving for DoorDash when I manage to get some free time . But I am still not able to keep up with all of my bills. These prices are rising faster than I can possibly be expected to keep up with. I don’t know how anyone is getting by and things are only expected to get worse in the near future!

Hi all! Currently in the process of a career pivot and had a question. My current company wants me to come back for a two week project in August. Is this too big of an ask on a new employer if I request unpaid leave for this time? I had asked them about delaying start date until this project is over but it was too far away, and I’ll start this month instead but haven’t yet. I don’t want to leave or start on a bad note so wondering if it’s even worth bringing up. Thanks!

Started at my first real firm job after quitting a nonprofit and I’m loving the new firm! But I’m the only one with pronouns in my email signature… should I bring this up? I think everyone here is cis but it would signal inclusion when we send emails, no?

Kind of a quick rant. I did a quick search through some firms websites because I am thinking of switching jobs. It is definitely clear most firms still do not embrace diversity. I know diverse applicants must be just as qualified! So what is keeping attorneys of color out?? It’s so discouraging.

So I work as an assistant manager at a restaurant for the past 9 months. I've worked in restaurants for the past 6 years science I was 16. Now I'm 22. I went to a trade school for media and film. I got a dream opportunity to work in the field making about the same or 10% more. I told myself the only reason I'd leave this company is for this type of job. Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
