It's not the economy that's the cause of it, it's simply profit motive. Companies adulterate food because it's profitable, it's not like they're being required to. They could cut back, but it would cost them money, so that's not going to happen. I think a good solution would be to educate people better on nutrition. But, let's face it, we're part of an industry designed to get people to eat things that aren't good for them.
Canada and EU countries ban these harmful substances and these food manufacturers produce the same products without the chemicals to these markets. They absolutely have the capability to sell in the US without these ingredients but the US market is driven by chasing unlimited growth by all means possible. If store brands are no longer cheaper compared to the name brands because of having better ingredients, their selling point is not as attractive to consumers instead of having a brand they trust because of that nostalgic bond to that brand.
Absolutely they should. But they will typically make decisions based on profits and not what is healthy for consumers. Europe regulates more what can be put into foods so that helps. The FDA should do that more for US manufacturers.
