In one hand, Consulting is great for the family, you can be home at hours others can't to be part of your kid's daily life (breakfast, school pick up, bath time, etc.) in the other hand, consulting is hard, when your home you are there, but often pulled away to do night work, presentations, and SOWs. Client work needs to get done (at the same time my son is my number one client) Any Dad's out there who have some good guiding principles they have found useful to strike the balance (knowing some days things are just not balanced)?

I usually try to set expectations with the team and or leader(s). If I’m home and I get an email for a request after 5pm that doesn’t say it’s needed first thing in the morning, I won’t touch it until the following day.

My family is always placed first. The way I look at it, if the firm has a problem with placing my family first, I’ll take my resume down the street to another firm and have a new job within the next 3 weeks.

^this. Setting expectations is key.

Also, I keep in mind that nothing, and I mean nothing, is more important than being an active part of your kids' lives. That time goes by so fast, and when you look back on it, I guarantee you won't be wishing for more time with your boss, clients, or powerfuckingpoint.

OP How often are you home during the week? How can you even do said things if you're traveling? I feel like since I travel so much, if I'm home Sunday nights or Friday nights, or am working from home one week, if I need to be offline while home after hours I try to be offline

I think its hard to set your own expectations of when you can't be bothered if you are new to a project. The key for me is to eat it the first few or even several weeks of the project, and then slowly start to set some "offline" hours when they see I can work hard and be trusted. Its actually kind of like what I did when I was dating

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

Hi All,
Just want your suggestion on this to help me decide.
I've been working in QA team for big data project and recently I've got offers from Startup and service based MNC as data engineer for the role of Data Engineer.
I've not worked on the actual development of ETL batches till now but I want to learn and grow gradually.

What kind of organisation would be best for me considering my mental health as well because I take too much stress ?

Thanks 🙏

I know I’m capable of getting the work done and they must see potential if they hired me. But I feel that if I ask for WFH or other accom. I’m gonna be shooting myself and my career in the foot.

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!
