In the public sector, it’s easy to get lost in deadlines, policy changes, and long todo lists. But every now and then, something reminds you why you chose this work in the first place.

For me, it was seeing a program we’ve worked on for months finally reach the people it was designed to help. One smile, one thank you, and suddenly the late nights and hard conversations felt worth it.

What’s a moment in your career that reminded you of your “why”? Share it so we can keep each other inspired. 💛

Years ago I worked on a county project that offered assistance for household repairs and the project was a nightmare of red tape. But after getting through the paperwork the results were gratifying. The program helped a lot of people, and I recall it as the first time I felt like my work had made a tangible difference in people's lives.

Amazing I love to see it, we often get the short end of the stick but this is good

Getting to see things happen is a huge reminder. Red tape, delays, sometimes it feels like a giant circle with no end. But eventually, you see the end, and that is nice to see all the hard work more tangibly.

Seeing little improvements sometimes makes me feel more energized than major wins. Seeing how I was able to contribute, even in small ways, to making my city better is a great feeling. Knowing I was involved in the project and I helped.

I’ve noticed that HR, when explaining why a candidate didn’t get the job, tend to lean on “You’re great, but we had candidates with more experience in [skill relevant to the job].” I do believe this is true in some cases, but it can’t possibly be for all of them.

HR folks — what feedback have you obscured by offering that line instead?

A HR question I really want to understand. ISRS HR quoted a podcast "The not so great resignation" saying 70% regret leaving and many want to go back to old employer. If this really the case the employee likely left due to higher pay at the new company. If they want to boomerang back they will likely come back at even a higher rate than they left the new company for. So getting double raise when they boomeranged. Isn't it unbeneficial, why not just give employee a 7% raise in the first place?
