The CoS role varies widely from company to company, and sometimes from team to team within a company. It is absolutely seen as a more versatile/respected title, and is almost always more money (unless you're a high finance C-level EA going to public sector/non-profit or something similar).
CoS could be an "EA on steroids" type role where you're doing admin stuff, but also have project work and some leadership responsibilities. It could also be something much more complex where deep industry knowledge, analytics skills, etc. may be required.
If your current EA role is purely a transactional role (i.e., mostly scheduling, travel, etc., with little insight into the business), you have limited EA experience or have only supported more junior exexutives, a CoS role is probably not right for you. If you are a very tenured EA with a more complex role and/or you have supported very senior execs, it could be a great next step in your career. You should always read the job specs, though, because the roles vary wildly in their scope.
CoS is definitely a step up. But be sure it’s official and not just additional responsibility for EA pay...... and make sure it’s real. Execs love to use that “role” to motivate you and keep you by their side but company structure might not officially recognize it as an official position ( few exceptions exist though)
Better and with a lot more responsibilities.
What are the typical additional responsibilities from Senior EA to Chief of Staff?? First time I'm hearing of this role. Always passed it along as I thought it wasnt an admin related.
It’s better For sure
What’s the salary for a senior EA vs cos in NY?
That's going to vary wildly by company. If it's public sector/non-profit, you could be looking at $50K EA & $65K CoS. If you're talking C-level at a finance or high tech firm, you could be talking 2x that for EA and 3x that for CoS, deoending on job specs (and potentially more). Very difficult to give a general range.
