Has anyone else begun to resent data science?
today I choose violence

Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

It really depends on what you want to do. Very early on in my career, I worked under some econematricians. They decided they didn't want to do long-term commercial banking / capital markets planning and instead reapplied their skills focused on marketing measurement and planning - but not just campaign, more total program effectiveness. These guys understood how to impact the longer term trend within a 2B market capped company. When i left the company for growth opportunities, I went on to do data science work, modeled some nerdy things, and then fell into converting CRM platforms to in-house CDPs. I slid heavier into DE roles, going from Hadoop to cloud platforms and integrating various data sources that could be useful in explaining customer behavior. I slid heavily into ID management and governance... and busting internal data siloes...
And with that, one of the econematricians is still at that company just riding out til he retires. The other rose up to a finite position and didn't leave, limiting his ceiling and allowing me to leap-frog above him (finally). I just have a fallback engineering BS degree, but a massive interest in learning and pivoting within my career.
So yeah, it could be a good degree, but figure out how to make it work for you - and don't be content on your degree driving your success... use it to identify the opportunity and take it.
Muxh cheaper ways to start building analytics skills. I would check out the Google data analytics certificate program. Or even just learn python for data through YouTube.
Also with 7 yoe, if your taking a data analyst job you are likely taking pay cut and a step down. Real data work requires a PhD.
What’s your current salary?
I am finishing up georgia Techs OMSA. I am 5 yoe in consulting at 140k and am interviewing for senior DS roles around 160k base and 180-200k TC
You’ve got plenty of runway to upskill and pivot careers without taking a cut
