Is anyone here in a Legal Operations role (of any level) or know much about those roles? I haven't heard a lot about them but lately I've seen a few Mgr/Dir of Legal Ops job postings and they look intriguing as a JD-adjacent, non-practicing job. Wondering what comp, WLB and average day/duties look like.

There are some great resources and a job board on the CLOC website (Corporate Legal Operations Consortium). I have a person on my team who is equivalent to a manager of Legal Ops. She is sort of in charge of managing the business of the department (in-house counsel) while the lawyers do the legal work. She manages budgets, outside counsel spend, communications, etc. she doesn’t have a JD and I would require one. Business acumen is more important to this role than legal background. She also sort of loosely co-manages our team that deploys legal technology like automations (RPA, workflow management tools).

It seems like a burgeoning area as more departments are realizing that the answer is not always to hire more lawyers, but sometimes to professionalize the practice (e.g. lawyers managing budgets is not the best use of lawyer time and doesn’t yield results commensurate with the opportunity-cost).

Good luck!

I am a Legal Operations Paralegal our average comp is 120k to 150k. My day to day looks just like the above poster. I just sit around letting lawyers what to do next. Just kidding. I try to make the small decisions so they can think about the big ones.

Hi everyone, I'm new to Canada and want to start my career here in the Financial and Banking industry. I have passed the CFA level 2 exam and was wondering if I have to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) as most of the job postings here mention about it. I saw that if someone passes at least the CFA level 1 exam then the requirement of CSC is exempted. Can anyone enlighten me about this? As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless
