I was told by my BL mentors that leaving for govt and coming back was the best way to enhance your trial skills in a way you wouldn’t be able to if you stayed in BL throughout your career. It definitely can boost your resume if you land in the right role and you can always lateral back to BL if you miss the money.
From a government perspective I'll add that ime, partners with government experience, on average, tend to be much better at knowing what to argue and when to fight over something (and when it's a waste of time). People who have been in firms can develop the same institutional mindset that people who spend their life in government can get. It helps to see the different ways sausage gets made.
It depends what division but generally yes, it’s a pretty great jump in terms of experience and options down the road. Not a good jump for purposes of pay
Yeah definitely a great jump and you can probably jump back to BL down the road after you get experience at DOJ. I’ve seen that many times.
