I thought NY was only market for the first 3 years and then blackbox. And also only market for salary, not bonus?

like

Don’t know about first three years but it’s not market for salary or bonus. Its blackbox. I work in New York office.

like

You can negotiate that each year but it’s not guaranteed or lockstep

likefunny

NY is market but I heard they hold people back class years if they don’t hit hours.

Can you name a firm (preferably NY office) that lets its associates work from a different country with no issues? The mid-size firm I’m currently at has been very flexible during covid but I’m looking to change firm (biglaw). Since my family is abroad I find it extremely valuable to be able to do this (I did this even before covid for a couple of weeks, twice a year). I’ve heard firms like Latham and Paul Weiss don’t allow it for tax reasons.

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?

What was the hardest class year for you? I used to think first year was by far the hardest but now I’m a third year and I’m really feeling the pressure to step up. I work in finance and at this point I’m expected to handle closing documents, manage first years, draft some portions of major docs, etc. I feel like I’m always frazzled, constantly second guessing if I handled something correctly and anxious to answer calls from clients/OC.
