Is it a bad move to accept a lower paying job with a higher title? Going from current title to IT Manager at a bigger company and about $16k less.

Honestly titles are just ego at the end of the day. The only real point of promotions for me is the earning potential so easier choice for me is higher pay rather than higher title. Are the benefits better for you though?

likeupliftinghelpful

Untrue. If you get a better title, then the job after this job may be a better job too because they will see that you already held the position of IT manager. It’s the long game.

likesmart

If this job will give you the experience of the IT manager which allows you to move to another company later and earn much more then yes. If it’s a title but no experience upgrade then no it’s not a good move. Think about the next step and ask :” would this move enable me (in one year) to get another IT manager job somewhere else with a a substantial salary upgrade ?

like

I managed teams of a dozen plus while in customer service because it was the only way to make any money in that space. I moved to IT and make a lot more NOT managing anyone. I'm not sure you could pay me enough now to go back and manage people... and for less money? That'd be a hard no. But to your point... if it's going to allow you to make more in the future go for it. I just realized my happiness not having to manage other people was the better fit.

I always tell new hires, at the end of the day, what will you tell your family, that I'm a VP at "This Company." But sorry, I cannot buy a good life for you... We all must realize we can work for any company, but we must earn a living for our family and ourselves. They make millions out of every employee they hire, and we need to ensure we make what we deserve or more, not less. At the end of the day, we all go back home. Unless you are unhappy with your current role and foresee that you might get laid off soon, stick and search for a better option. All the best.

IT Manager is such a low level title. Also, titles don't matter much. You can put whatever title you want on your resume or linkedin profile. No one will know otherwise. People do it all the time and 'fake it til you make it'.

Personally, I'd rather be a principal cloud engineer than an IT manager if we're just going by titles.

If you are already employed then what percentage pay cut are you planning on taking? If you're making $500,000 a year $16,000 is not a lot. But if you are making $100,000 a year and going down to something like 84,000 that's a greater percentage and will impact your life more and unless you have other sources of income you were willing to pay at least $16,000 per year for a title. Why don't you just wait to get a higher title if that's what's important to you and get a $16,000 bump in pay at some later point.

like

Depends on you! What do you want at this moment? Of the position does something to your fulfillment in life, why not. But if you think the moment is the thing right now, drop that position sharply

Is there a better future you envision of making more in this role or another at this other company? $16k isn’t a small amount. What’s making you to think this is better than what you have?

I would go for a lower title but higher salary anytime

Will it give you new skills that you can use to be better off in the following job?

Is it less work? At some point, the people with the lofty titles are doing less work. That said, just be honest with them. Say that you expect them to at least match your current salary and let them make the decision for you. Then it's not you rejecting the position.

Look at the current job market; if you’re able to secure a new role with a better title, go for it. Money often follows through annual raises, promotions, or your next job switch. While some may argue that titles don’t matter, my experience strongly suggests otherwise. A title comes with a set of expectations, authority, and visibility within the org chart—key factors that larger organizations prioritize in the future. This is particularly important unless you’re planning to return to smaller organizations later in your career.

It's a job!!! For many of us who have been out of work for months (me it will be almost 2 years), a job with a paycheck is a blessing!!! Who cares about the "job title". Can you do it and do it well? What matters is that you are bringing money home. Got to keep the lights on and food on the table!!!

Unless you plan to flip that title into a better paying job at a different company down the road, what's the point? Unless, of course, you prefer the job duties of the IT Manager role.

Yes I am agree

While interviewing or while dancing around the offer, ask what the job role range is. Once you are in the offer stage, you should feel like you are having a more balanced conversation & it's time to work for you if you have never done so up to that point or generally don't prioritize that first. This is the moment. Get the range.

Just for a short time so you can take advantage of their branding. maybe they offer a raise to you before you find a better job using their branding

Did you ask for more salary? I've had companies exceed their salary range to make me an offer that matches or exceeds my current salary. It makes them value you even more by having HR advocate for you.

The bigger company might have room for growth as long as you deliver, getting even more than you made in the past is a possibility.

I would say it depends. How much of a shave is it? Is the company better culturally? The reality is once you have held the job you have a competitive edge when you go to apply for a similar position elsewhere.

Do you typically need more experience before going in house? Would be great to hear about various experiences from those that have made the transition. Thanks!

which is fair, and to show my credibility I published my first app last week, but I’m still getting similar messages from recruiters this week. Idk what to do??
