You have options as to what to say. Unfortunately, not every opportunity is going to be a good fit, but we don't k ow that until we are in it. Try one of these: There wasn't full alignment in what you were seeking compared to what the firm ultimately had to offer, and it became clear over time. It wasn't a fit, but it did give you clarity about the type of role you are ultimately looking for and elaborate. The trajectory of what you are looking for was not available internally. The expectations of the role didn't fully align with what you are looking for long term and elaborate. Something along those lines should hopefully work.

So how long have you been at the current firm? Obviously, the shorter the stint, the easier it is to just leave it off your resume. The longer you’ve been there, the more it invites questions and the more of a gap you’ll have to explain.

Given the context (3 years at firm before and 2 years at firm after), I think you’re being too worried about it. You’ll probably be asked why you left that place after such a short stint, but you don’t look like someone hopping every year.

The shorter stint will get flagged during the employment verification process, and it may be brought to the firm's attention if it's inconsistent with your resume. That could be cause to rescind your offer, or the firm may not even care (or notice that it's flagged).

Are you me?

No. Do not do this under any circumstances.
