You have a JD and passed the bar? Sure. Happens regularly.

Yeah. I’m pretty sure BU offers an 18 month program that does the tax LLM full time plus your typical contracts, torts, con law, evidence, etc., courses for foreign trained lawyers to allow them to sit for NY and CA at least.

From what LLM program? Do you have any other tax experience? Are you looking for junior roles or an of counsel role?

Sure it’s possible but we need a lot more info like A1 mentioned

Sure- I had a job in tax lined up before I had the LLM- it’s all about networking and figuring out where you want work/type of tax you want to do. But everyone’s experience of different- and I work in PNW- Very different market from rest of the country

Yes

I have a JD and I've passed the bar. Which areas of tax seem to be the most in demand?

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?
