To me it would depend on the recruiter. Someone reputable, no. Creative Circle? Definitely go for it, screw em.... oops this is the recruiter bowl. Interested to hear their POV.
Cool. Good question.
Previously we discussed how shitty it is for external recruiters to not reveal which agency it is upon first communication with a potential candidate.
This is an example of why they keep it to themselves.
Now, to answer your question:
If the recruiter communicated with you only once and was inexperienced enough to reveal the agency in that first communication, you may write back and say, "thanks for reaching out, but I already have a connection to that agency and they will let me know if there is a role for me, so I'd prefer to go through my direct connections"
If you had a phone or in person interview with the external recruiter, then, yep, it's really bad form to go behind the recruiter's back to get the job, especially if he or she works independently and relies on commission for his or her livelihood.
Additionally, that recruiter may one day end up at an agency in house where you want to work. If you act shady, he or she will remember and feel you are a dishonest person.
Let's talk about creative circle. There are a lot of good people there, but they do take too big of a cut and sometimes their practices are less than on the up and up. Make sure if you sign up with them that you know what you're agreeing to. Tell them you want to be alerted BEFORE you are submitted to any agency. That said, I have been introduced to a plethora of juniors through cc who've gone on to become really successful senior level employees and I'd have never met them without them having gone through CC.

No go for it!
@Talent Recruiter - super helpful insight, thank you. What if I work through the recruiter to let him know about the internal contact before making any intros to the HM? My goal is to add further heat to my application by having someone within the organization vouch for work we did together, not undercut/bypass the recruiter who I very much want to keep a good relationship with.
As good as your contact might be, they may not be a fan favorite at the agency. Sometimes it hurts you. Why not try to find out who the recruiter is instead?
