I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Mindtree culture is detoriating day by day . No clarity on hike and appraisal even though mail have been sent regarding this since Dec 2021 . Disgusting HR head practice who joined from CTS . How come they don't abide by what they communicate and keep silence without any update for delay .
Shameful . Feeling Disappointed. Has joined this company 11 months back with hopes for longer and fruitful association but will resign soon . Pathetic company Mindtree

Consulting firms don’t have a monopoly on smart people doing interesting things
Yes
Different for every person
What about an exit for a non comfy position?
Horrible questions this evening. Do you expect any answer actually applicable to your situation? [insert generic how much do you value family, how much do you like the job, value on money, etc]
Nah. Consulting is for the most part a sham, and the lack of true technical knowledge will surface over the next decade
It’s a personal choice, agree consulting doesn’t have a monopoly but we generally have a greater chance of working with better people. I’d take a hard and rewarding job (not compensation) over a cushy and compensating job
Don’t make the assumption that industry is comfy. I worked over 20 years in industry and kicked my own ass to rise to senior leader. I guess you could take and stay at a lower level role, but people who join consulting and are good at it are generally type A and won’t settle. What’s nice about the scenario I painted is that it is YOUR choice to kick butt and be successful vs others making you work like a maniac and make them successful
^everyone has said this for the last 20 years. Maybe longer!
