Are they not the same thing in practice?
A1 — really depends how the company treats product managers. 100% can be effectively a project manager. This is true bc a lot of orgs are saying they want a “product mindset” but hire product people to basically be project or program managers.
However, if you’re the type of product manager that is positioned as an external facing resource to customers (gathering reqs, user testing, fielding feedback, doing demos, generally part of the selling process) your job goes way beyond that of a project manager. I also have input to UI/UX design and strategy decisions around roll out/deployment, on top of the work with engineering teams to troubleshoot problems and make technical architecture decisions based on future requirements.
That said, many things are similar between the two (roadmap/progress, status reporting, budget management, to name a few). Just depends on how the company positions you.
Given the differences in demand between the two roles that we see on this board (everybody dying to get into product) you'll probably have an easy time switching.
What is it about product management that you're not liking?
Thanks for the insight. I’ve been thinking about making this transition bc there are aspects of product that sound so interesting to me, but the “always on” is a big worrying factor for me after consulting.
Generally in tech, Product is a more complex and high paying job than project.
Going Product to Project/Program is easier.
I can totally see how OP feels. People sell product manager as the dream exit role b/c of the pay and prestige but it’s a very difficult, stressful and pressured filled job and based on what my friends tell me and the exposure I have to it as a project manager (which sucks in it’s own ways as well and pays less if that matters). I think a good chunk of people with little exposure to it don’t know exact what they are getting it to and basically want product because it’s the cool thing to do but don’t understand the day to day.
I exited from EYP to Product Management (Tech) and would suggest that when you get into the role, you find that prestige is meaningless.
It will likely help when I exit and pay is solid.
I’ve been through two full scale launches that represent new business lines and while it can be a grind, the WLB is better than consulting. The GM description though is fitting and the pressure can be much higher because it isn’t finite like a consulting engagement.

A2 see my response above for some additional color. But TC1’s response is for sure accurate. They have some overlap depending on how a company treats them, but they are fundamentally not the same role.
Agree with Amazon - much easer to go from product to project. If you feel more comfortable with project or program management, you have to know yourself and make the switch if it’s what’s right for you. Shouldn’t be hard to find a solid job.
