Is Netflix's binge-watching behavior causing our generation to lose ambition and drive? I know it sounds like a stretch but if your favorite season is handed to you on a silver, continous platter, you won't fight for anything.

What, pray, were you "fighting" for when you had to wait a week for episodes....?

likefunny

My thoughts exactly 😂 Like fighting for my life to watch next week’s episode?

No, I don’t think so. I’d be willing to bet if you eliminated all streaming then another distraction would just take it’s place.

like

What, why would that sound like a stretch 🙄

like

Netflix’s biggest competitor is sleep and I can absolutely attest to wanting to go to bed at a reasonable hour but ended up staying awake til 3am finishing a season. So yes I think there’s definitely better things we can be doing with our lives than watching Netflix at 3am and in that sense I absolutely agree it kills motivation and drive

like

SLEEP. Yes. We love sleep.

Americans have been watching 5 hours of TV / internet a day for several generations now.

Fun fact, the average American in the 1946 went to the movies every week.... and presumably listened to a LOT of radio.

like

They were "Radio and Chill"-ing

I think the real culprit, whether real or perceived, isn't Netflix. It's bite-sized entertainment from YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms. Those short bursts of amusement function like little dopamine hits and cause a constant drive for the next quick bit of entertainment. I'm 40 and have noticed, especially over the last couple years of odd pandemic life, that I REALLY have to focus to read a book, a long magazine article, or to watch a full two hour dramatic movie. I love it when I pull it off, but I've become accustomed to immediate gratification from whatever screen is in front of me. My fiancee is 32 and I can tell it's a much bigger challenge for her.

So all of that said, and hey, it's just my opinion, but if watching an entire season of a Netflix series over two nights makes someone turn away from their phone or tablet for 5-6 hours a night, what's the problem? The viewer is investing the time in a longer, more complex story, and maybe even gaining something from it.

like

Yeah, “Netflix and chill” is an outlet for and symptom of people choosing to forgoing responsibility and not develop any ambition to build and create value. The problem is the human, not the instant gratification.

likefunny

Input your definition and at some level the comment is still true.

If my entire lifetime’s salary was handed to me in one go, then sure I’d have nothing to ‘fight for’ but um… Netflix is just series and movies.

like

No, i think the ones who were always going to be ambitious aren't distracted by the fickleness of bingwatching Netflix

like

Pre streaming we all fought for our right to party 🎉

Very very true hahah

No way. I don't feel like I binge watch that often. And I feel like everyone I know is too busy to really binge. Not that we don't do it but its not often.

No. But it does show that you can convince a multitude of people that much less is somehow more.

100%

If you think Netflix binge watching is the biggest problem of your generation then God help us. That being said, I think I know what you're trying to get at, and yes, excessive online media and social media use is a real problem. I know it sounds insane, but try this: come Friday night turn off your phone and laptop and put them away, then only turn back on on Monday morning.

Delayed gratification has become less prevalent. People need things now and won’t take no for an answer. Convenience is paramount in our personal lives as well as work lives.
Here is your participation trophy for starting a thread, and did you get that promotion after three months at the new job?

Answering with a question, Does Netflix's binge-watching behavior a symptom of burnout from jobs that don't care about their employees and zapping every ounce of life from them so that they don't have ambition nor drive?

Naw, if anything, it's making people more selective about what the watch because there's the element of choice. Pre-streaming, people would just stare at whatever was on TV, so lots of like, infomercials and public access and MTV. If there was a show you wanted to see, you were at the mercy of the schedule.
Most shows on Netflix can be watched in a day and then you're done, so it's not like more of a time commitment than a day at the beach. You can only watch a fave so many times before the shine wears off. I can only toss so many coins to my Witcher, y'know?
Another thing to consider, lots of people do other things while Netflix is on, I've got a friend who has made a ton of art while the TV is chugging along. All my animator and storyboard friends keep it on like music while they work. I do most of my cooking with standup comedy on in the background.

We have another company taking over in January, but I still have some pretty important dev needs until then and I can’t get him to do a thing. I truly try to give him all he needs.

There's a debate about this going on in the Google bowl, which I find interesting. Most people are saying they don't have a problem with this, but I think it's deeply unfair.

The argument that resonates with me is that if you move to a LCOL city the value of your output isn't all of sudden worth 25% less.

Curious what others in the industry think.
