Is PMO experience valuable? Got put in a PM role at the client site and feeling like I have no analytical opportunity.

Definitely valuable to learn to drive things forward. Gives you good exposure to leadership. Everyone should do it for a few months.

You only feel like that because it's true... But in all honesty, the work will probably be mundane and repetitive, but not overly difficult. This would open you up to actual dig around the client and be the ears for your practice? Imagine being able to mention to the MD or Partner "Hey this group is behind a lot due to the work load and are having trouble finding people to fill the roles... Maybe we can sell. Them some staff Aug work?"

But if you just do what is expected of you, and nothing above and beyond, then yes this will feel like a mundane office job

I was on a PMO roll up my last firm once. I couldn’t wait to roll off. The day I did roll off, I blasted “fresh up out of jail“ on the drive home. Granted, my team was pretty toxic at that time but I learned much about integrating politically with an org.

I’ve been in a PM role for a about 4 years, two different employers. I’ll say it’s valuable in that you’ll understand the ins and outs of your project and client requirements and will get client facing management experience. I will agree that you don’t have too much analytics opportunities but you can push that if you want.

Most delivery leads I've worked with have considerable PMO experience, and are the crux of getting shit done.

PMO work at junior levels suck, but is valuable.

I’m sorry OP but everyone that I know in a PMO role did the absolute bullshit work: making sure the printers are filled, ordering coffee, etc. PMO practitioners don’t learn any hard skills.

You can always find ways to make your role analytical. You can optimize the hell out of your job and learn from it. My PM experience definitely helped me jump from SC to M very quickly.

Figure out how to own content, see big picture, help clients, and get as efficient as possible with the blocking and tackling to stay sane

Lots of repetition in PMO, which offers the perfect opportunity to automate tasks (e.g., weekly reporting ) via python or even VBA in Excel Dashboards.

PMO and PM are very different roles. PMO roles are generally project grunt work, but could be valuable as long as it’s a short project. PM roles require you to oversee and manage a project, very different level of expertise required

Yeah its PM work

Why is education deemed more valuable on a pay scale than experience? Employers will pay someone with a degree and no experience a greater salary, than someone who has exhibited the experience. I’m curious. What would you say is the best industry / sector for…1. WLB, 2. Great people / team, 3. Exit opp’s., and 4. Overall (mix of the above). Goes without saying the obvious “it depends on office, team, project, client, etc.” So this is an ask for general observations.
