They’re different paths, not a step back. If an AD is looking down on a designer, they’re probably just jealous they don’t have any actual design skills themselves. 😉
Thank you for this!
Anything with junior in front of it is the step back. You’re good!

It’s all how you spin it my friend. I wouldn’t automatically assume it’s a step back if I saw it on a resume. Just sell it the right way when you leave, and for now, get yourself as much responsibility as possible.
What’s a good way to sell this if they were to leave? Like broadening your skill set as an AD to get another perspective in the industry? I’ve been considering possibly getting a job as a retoucher or motion graphic artist and I would love advice on how to spin it!!
Depends on what you want. To some a step back. To others a step forward. What do you really want to be doing?
I agree. The biggest thing for me is creating great work, but I’m feeling stifled in the type of work I’m doing right now.
I think traditionally it may be a step back, but titles these days can be misleading. Like I’ve known Graphic Designers who have done illustration, photography, motion, UI/UX etc. In their job responsibilities as part of the Graphic Design process.
That being said, I went from a Designer role to a Jr. AD role, and when I was a Designer the Art Directors, ACDs and CDs were the ones who told me what to do depending on who I was working with.
