I think its terribly reflective of how bad the market is and it's at all levels. There is an over saturation of attorneys and it mean companies can have their pick of the litter. People now have to hope their over qualification will make hiring managers feel they are getting the most bang for their buck.
Oh 100 percent but this is the only move/strategy these people have.
Rising Star
We posted a role in the fall that got dozens of applications on LinkedIn but not a single one was worth giving an interview or even a screener. I ended up referring my old boss who was laid off and he was immediately given an offer. But he went from being an Executive Director to Director so a big title cut.
Interesting. There are a lot of layoffs in recent years maybe the reason why many overqualified people are in the market
For an in house position? People just want out of firms.
Agreed. I’m trying to get out of the firm environment.
It is also very possible that some of us seasoned lawyers are looking for a change and/or more opportunities for growth but not finding either in our current position. We’re looking for firms willing to give us a chance and allow us to perhaps help the new firm; however, many law firms pass us by because:
1. We are too experienced (and assumed possible flight risk);
2. We are trying to lateral from a lesser known firm to a better firm with perceived better opportunities; yet, the better firm believes that we do not meet their requirements to be a “high caliber” attorney for them;
3. We are not from a T20 law school, which the corporate client wants to see
4. Since we’re willing to accept less pay, there must be something wrong with us. So why take the chance.
I’ve heard all of these reasons from various recruiters. Is it the job market or really something else?
Well said
Dang that’s crazy
I know.
It's been a tough market for awhile, but I feel like more people are at least starting to be aware of it.
Yes, it is
Have you been living under a rock for the past two years? Yes, it really is that bad. I’m a new lawyer who has been looking for an in house junior role since 2023. I have 2.5 years of in house contracts and legal ops experience. I have done 126 interviews since graduating, two verbal offers fell through, 20 final rounds.
L1 it’s brutal. I’m sorry you’ve been through so many interviews, it’s time consuming, draining & depressing. Best of luck to you!
After I got laid off from a private equity company in June ‘25, I lost count of how many jobs I applied for & how many interviews I had in those 5.5 months. With many companies I had multiple rounds of interviews, & with one of company I had 6 rounds of interviews & they even gave me a tour of their HQ, just to be told a week later that I didn’t get a job. I have over 18 years of law firm & in-house experience, & all the right education, yet so many companies would lowball on the salary just because they can.
That does seem to be an illustration of how the job market is working. When you've got too many seekers and not enough positions, you get imbalances like what you're seeing. And those conditions can drive salaries downward, as lowball offers will be accepted and thus become the standard going rate.
I hope this is just temporary!
That’s insane. I’ve been seeing plenty of postings for 7 years and above with few junior listings. I’m in the range of your posting (2nd year), and I haven’t received call backs from the few listings I’ve actually been qualified for.
Just give it some time, soon there will be more openings after the bonus season
In-house jobs are rare, so if it’s law firm folks applying, could be just trying to escape. Yes, even partners. I’ve known people who took less than half their pay to go in-house.
I’m in patent litigation and love private practice. I don’t see an issue with lateraling—there are jobs, at least in private practice (in-house is a different matter).
I understand, I guess a lot people want to escape the billable hours
No, it’s a sign some “parters or GCs” are not really the type of “partners and GCs” you are used to.
This is in-house? That’s crazy.
Yes in house
