I see this all the time. I think a part of this behaviour is rooted in trying to counteract insecurity and impostor syndrome.
Fact. The impostor syndrome is strong where I work.
I agree that IB attracts highly competitive people, which is part of it. I also agree that there is a heavy degree of coping given the all-consuming lifestyle that comes with being a part of this industry. If this is all your life is and ever will be, there is probably a tendency to double down on how smart and special you are for being here
I understand that it’s part of our “culture” and maybe you got to play your part if you want to survive in this business.
I’ve worked with a fair share of IB Bankers. It really depends on the firm, some are absolutely insufferable and a joke to work with. Ironically the more education they have the more they try to prove themselves ie MBA/JD people. It’s kind of embarrassing on the client side to see this behavior.
