Yeah, screw the work. It’s all advertising. Pay me.

But I’m an ~artist~
Nah fam, you’re making banner ads.
Imo it's a pretty white thing to say. Saying "you'll have better opportunities at poor paying places" or whatever is a huge assumption that my black ass is in the room for anything other than having a black guy in the room. The opportunity they cite just doesn't happen as often if you don't look a certain way, so you can bet I'll take the higher paying job. At the end of the day I'm doing this shit to pay my rent and my mom's rent.
Exactly. I’m also black and the freedom not to need better paying opportunities felt unrealistic.
they have money because they chased the work which over time (promotions, new agencies hiring them) gave them more money.
Totally makes sense. The general system in place means you need a good book for the next opportunity. I built the book and then got gaslighted with this phrase when a life changing job came my way including work I truly believe in. So it really depends on the circumstances. They gave me this advice because they thought the work they’ve been giving me were projects I’ve always wanted to do. Couldn’t have been more opposite.

Like when a hot person gives "just be yourself!" dating advice
“Hot” doesn’t even do it if you’re a straight dude. As long as you’re not ugly, you need the right aggressiveness (in a non shitty way) in your personality (I.e. you still “have” to make the first move/ask the woman out/etc)… which even further enforces that “just be yourself” shitty advice…
Chasing the work IS chasing the money. It’s doing it in a smarter way by making you more hireable. It raises your earning potential in the long run and also extends your career.
Chasing the fast dollar will have you making awful work and eventually make you unhireable because the salary you command won’t match your output.
You can alternate between the two, chase the work until you command a higher rate, then chase the money until you feel like your portfolio is getting stale. Repeat.

Yeah - it’s generally true that focusing on your book is a better long term game plan. That said, a lot of places that preach that do so to NOT pay you what you’re worth. At some point, F U PAY ME. Ideally it’s not one or the other entirely.
We really gotta stop labeling everyone more successful than us as “privileged.” You can still get paid well at a good shop, but the work should be the priority if you really want to make a name for yourself in this industry.
It’s ok to be privileged! It. Is. OK. To. Be. Privileged. The problem is that people get offended when they’re called privileged. You can be privileged, come from a rich family, and still be a kick-ass hard-working employee deserving of your job. Privileged people never want to admit that their privileges helped them along the way. Privileged people never want to admit that no, you didn’t grow up middle-class, you grew up rich. I say this as a privileged person. Yeah sure I’m a hard worker who deserved my job, but I didn’t have to stay in a shitty local college to raise my three younger siblings because my mom was too drugged out. Yes I busted my ass in school but I’m lucky enough that I didn’t graduate with $80k in student loans. Yes I worked just as hard as everyone else but my ability to afford thousands of dollars to pay monthly dues to what amounted to an alcohol social club allowed me to meet the right people.
Or when the top dog at your company says something like “we’ve walked away from money before….”🤮
Respectfully, I beg to differ.
I’m an immigrant, raised by a single mother who couldn’t afford a telephone (this was pre-cellphone), and we eventually ended up homeless.
Sure, money was a priority goal for me, when I got older. But my principles have, and always will, mean more.
Several years ago I walked out of a CCO job at a successful startup, leaving a 1% stake on the table. Why? Because I intervened during a voice record when the “sound engineer”, who also happened to be the Founder and CEO’s husband, hurled abuse at the young lady providing the V/O. I ushered all the production staff out of the studio, confronted the asshole, then drove directly back to the office and told the CEO where she could stick her job.
The company just sold for multiple billions of dollars.
And I wouldn’t change a fucking thing.
So, not everyone who says something like “we’ve walked away from money before” comes from money. Some simply have principles they refuse to compromise.
You won’t get the money unless you’ve done great work. So you kind of have to chase the work. And you’ll soon make great work, and watch the offers roll in.
I’ve chased money and I’ve chased work. You can do both. If it doesn’t work out you can leave and chase work which usually means more money.
I’m so tired.
I can whip out that culture changing banner ad or social post with the best of them. Pay my ass.
