It’s time to give people a chance.

There are so many individuals right now who are hungry for an opportunity.

Some of the BEST people I’ve ever hired to work on my teams throughout the years had zero experience.

What they did have was great character, an awesome attitude and a willingness to learn.

You may be amazed, like I was, at what you will find.

Years ago, I hired a guy to be my assistant who had just graduated from one of the “100 Great Books” colleges. We had a very pleasant conversation and I made the offer. He asked, “Why me? I have no industry experience.” I replied, “You know how to think. I can teach you everything else.”

It was one of my best decisions.

So true! I always say you can teach someone the company, but you cannot teach work ethic, eagerness to learn, and that overall drive/positive attitude. You're right, sometimes the best potential employees are overlooked simply because they don't have a degree.

I really like this pyramid. It shows the importance of character and attitude. I was just trying to teach my son this after his baseball game today. Skills will only take you so far. You have to have a good attitude and be a person of integrity as well.

Yes, this!!!!! I am, after 20 years, finally getting a chance at titled leadership. I have been a go-to for so many for so long. It's a killer to be this patient. Next challenge-get a rate offer that says the same.

Good reminder to choose partners (both companies and people) in this way. I acquired a company that had revenue, but the owners lacked good character. Turned into a legal disaster.

Throughout my entire career, I have always flipped that triangle upside down and started with character and attitude those two we’re far more important than a rest

What are the best responses for “a time when you led a team” in a consulting interview, for someone who has not had a managerial position (1 yoe) before? I also don’t want to use an example from undergrad so I’m kind of stuck. What are they really looking for in this question? Initiative? Impact? People skills? And how would you differentiate this vs “a time when you worked in a team”

Additional Posts in Leadership

I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. In addition, my director said I will be receiving 'deep delegation' from them. I don't mind more work, but deep delegation is a new term I've never heard. What does that mean lol?

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

My remit quadrupled+ in a recent re-org with no increase in pay/promotion, my new director is new to the company and was zero help, and I was passed over for recent promotion during the comp cycle. The new director essentially began shutting me down any time I ask for clarity in my career progression. Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?
