Society as we know it has an addiction to consumerism—we buy things we don’t need, and you feed that addiction by doing the advertising for said products. In fact, as a creative director, you are responsible for making sure the work you oversee uses the right psychological triggers to push the right buttons that convince people they need to purchase a product that they really don’t need to.
Miss me with the high horse, holier than thou attitude.
Yeah, there are psychological triggers that make people hungry, or insecure, that marketers exploit.
You need to eat, but you don’t necessarily need to eat a burger from McDonald’s.
There was the whole women body shaming aspect of femcare. And we’ve since seen the whitewashing of body positivity over corporate exploitation.
Selling an addictive product makes you a bad creative. Selling a product that causes mass death makes you a bad person.
Your reply is a “so what”. And that is why it continues to happen. Cowardly.
Do you ever get lonely up there all alone on your perch?
Does your agency have a tobacco AND a healthcare client? Just wondering if you are making money from both ends of misery.
Giving people cancer and denying them aid seems to be an actual attack on humanity.
Hopefully you wake up to what you are doing someday without personal loss to slap you in the face!
Are you ok with products made with cheap, sometimes slave labor overseas? Would you be giddy to work on Apple knowing that Foxcon has suicide nets around its facility?
I don’t think ice is as bad or worse than slave labor.
Here, I’ll make you happy. I haven’t had the privilege of working on a brand that was in the business of addiction. If I had to in order to support my family I would, but I would thoroughly not enjoy it.
Which products do you consider highly addictive? Cigarette advertising is basically nonexistent now. That leaves alcohol and sports betting? Most people who use alcohol / gamble don’t become addicted.
Sports betting and gambling adds need to get wrangled in. Prior to working in advertising, I worked at a Sports Betting consulting firm that helped with regulations and the stuff is just out of control, still the Wild West for gambling rn. Can’t watch a game without getting bombarded with betting ads.

Would you work on food brands? Some people eat themselves to death. Where do you draw the line?
Promoting food that is bad for you? Eating excessive carbs is not healthy. That includes making a sandwich at home.
But you go to a nice restaurant, and they are loading everything with clarified butter, salt, heavy cream. You are consuming thousands more calories than from a McDonald’s.
Harmful ingredients to me are how our entire food and water supply has been contaminated with microplastics and pharmaceutical and industrial runoff. And it is just going to get worse now.
this makes me think of sports gambling apps
I’m not “giddy” to work on anything. But would I try hard and give a shit working on Apple? Of course.
I had this same dilemma about 8 years ago working on a marlboro pitch. I've sold pizza and other types of fast food and my ecd and I said the same things. At least with qsr it fills a basic human need. But tobacco is just bad. Everything about it is so depressing. Working with the strategy director to understand that less people smoke every year but they make more money every year. Coming in on weekends to read legislation to find where we could actually do anything if we won the account. Researching in and Hispanic and black neighborhoods to see how the product is marketed and and telling a junior team member to go on PornHub in the office because what's the one a few places where you can actually see their ads in the wild.
I knew this was my moment but I asked the MD to pull me off the account but I had too much melanin for him to honor that request. I practice endlessly to make sure that my part of the pitch was perfect. What's subconsciously my brain knew I didn't want to do it and I completely blanked in the middle of the presentation.
What made it so ironic is that it was that moment that made us win the account because they loved how the MD stepped in and we worked as a team I couldn't deal.
Oh, and all the brand managers for every other brand that they rep were in the room and they were vaping and smoking during the meeting.
So get all the money you can and then do something good to make up for it later in life is all you can do. But this was the one thing that made me not want to do what it is that we do
